Cybercrime has real victims – the title of one of my panels at #WEF26. Back in 2022, INTERPOL first sounded the alarm about a disturbing trend: people being trafficked through fake job ads, then forced to work in online scam centres committing fraud at an industrial scale. Since then, we’ve seen this model spread beyond Asia, where it was first reported, into the Middle East, West Africa (emerging as a new hub) and Central America. We’re also seeing how technology, such as the use of AI, is accelerating the harm across all levels. From generating convincing fake job adverts which attract human trafficking victims, to creating deepfake profiles and scripts to be used on targets of financial scams. In recent years we have been supporting our member countries tackle this problem based on three pillars: 1Increased information sharing across law enforcement worldwide to identify and track routes, perpetrators and criminal methods. 2Stronger partnerships with NGOs – which are often a crucial point of contact for victims – and technology companies, whose platforms are exploited to scam both sets of victims. 3Robust international enforcement, including coordinated operations that rescue victims, arrest traffickers and recover illicit funds. INTERPOL’s I-GRIP mechanism alone has helped intercept hundreds of millions of dollars.
