YES! We shouldn’t require something that is contrary to research. We must hold these students accountable and to high standards but they shouldn’t be retained due to a lack of language acquisition.

Now is the time to contact your legislature and advocate for the Alabama Literacy Act to include a good cause exemption for EL students that are still acquiring language skills, matching current research that states EL students need 5-7 years acquire language proficiency.

Teachers plates are still overflowing. They still have at least five jobs. Teacher, curriculum developer, IT for students, therapist for parents struggling, & office worker. All while trying to take care of their family too. They need grace & support now more than ever.
