My ancestors were Scandinavians, and I was surprised to discover that the Vikings were slave traders.
They used those cool-looking Viking ships to sail up rivers and penetrate deeply into the European continent to buy and sell slaves.
They sold a lot of Eastern Europeans which is why the word "slave" comes from "Slav" (Slavic).
In the 9th century, St. Anskar brought Christianity to the Danes and the Swedes, and tried to end the Viking slave trade.
