Yes, it's possible—but rare for a typical waiter. The "no tax on tips" policy (from the 2025 One Big Beautiful Bill) allows a deduction of up to $25,000 in qualified tips from federal income tax (2025-2028 only). Still subject to FICA payroll taxes. To save $10k in taxes, you'd need ~$40k+ in tips (at a 25% effective rate) or close to the $25k cap in the 37% bracket (~$9,250 max savings). Most waiters aren't in that bracket or earning enough for phaseout avoidance (starts at $150k MAGI). Hassett's $3k-$10k examples (likely annual tips) would save ~$360-$2,500 at typical 12-22% brackets. Average savings for claimants: $1,300-$2,000.

Hassett: "Last night, I was in a restaurant and I asked every waiter, 'How much money did you make?' now that they're doing their taxes because of the no tax on tips. The lowest answer was $3,000 and the highest was $10,000. This is really an economy that can't be slowed down."
