Tonight we kick off our final course of Summer 2023 season, Cave Archaeology! Follow along for updates of this week’s adventures. 😎

Checking out the Crawford Hydrology Laboratory to follow up with our dye trace techniques we learned from earlier in the week.

Learning about karst challenges within the Lost River Basin this afternoon.

Checking out flooding and sinkhole issues in Bowling Green, KY this morning with Dr. Chris Groves and Autumn Singer from the Crawford Hydrology Laboratory.

Successful trip to @HiddenRiverCave to learn about groundwater pollution and the environmental success story of the Hidden River Cave basin. We also learned about the work done by the @SupportACCA and their involvement with the Mammoth Cave region.

We are headed in a local cave to do a dye trace and learn field techniques!

Fourth and final stop for the day: Mammoth Cave! Students walked along the River Styx/Historic Tour Routes to learn about the hydrogeology of Mammoth Cave. This allowed students to tie together the surface and subsurface features they have learned so far.

Third stop: Cedar Sink and Turnhole Bend Making the connection from the sinkhole plain to the Green River.

First stop: Sinkhole Plain. Learning where the water drains to create the caves and karst system of central Kentucky. Also looking at the relationship between the Pennyroyal Plateau and the Chester Upland. Crawford Hydrology Laboratory WKU - CHNGES

Cave explorers and new cave enthusiasts can preserve cave habitat by sticking to the trail in designated areas. This way our footsteps don't disturb the fragile formations or microbiota living on the surfaces.
