Super late post! Congrats to Leah Lund on defending her thesis on the crosstalk between mechanical forces and pHi in driving cancer behaviors. Leah defended July 30th and started her new job as a teaching faculty at Indiana Univ. South Bend on Aug. 1st. Her students are so lucky!

Tenure docs submitted? Ice cream for everyone! HUGE thanks to current & former White Lab members! Any success I've had as a PI is a direct result of their hard work & dedication. And any joy I've experienced as a PI has come from seeing them succeed (or from their exciting data!)

Had a great visit to Penn State to present our work on pH-dependent protein allostery. It was great to learn about the great work going on in the department. Getting to talk about science all day with smart people was a joy. Thanks @cdokafor for the invite!

This should be required reading! Really enjoyed Kaela's comments on leaving an all-women's undergraduate for grad school. Resonates with my experience! While resiliency is required for success in STEM (there's a LOT of rejection), leaders must do more to remove systemic barriers!

This was true when we started the lab in 2019. Doubly true today.

Today we cancelled lab meeting and carved pumpkins instead. IJ stumped us with some Halloween trivia followed by a hyper-competitive game of Uno (congrats to the victor @cariasma18)! We laughed so much that we got in trouble (shhh!!!!)

Huge congrats to Châu Nguyen (@chloengyn267) who passed her candidacy exam today with flying colors! Châu is working to identify pH sensitive proteins involved in regulating cytokinesis and G1/S transition.

Alarming news from MIT (my Ph.D. alma mater). Black students made up 15% of the 2027 class, but just 5% of the 2028 class (post-SCOTUS ruling). Hispanic students went from 16% to 11%. Diversity strengthens the STEM education experience for ALL STUDENTS! nytimes.com/2024/08/21/us/…

Actually one reviewer commented: "I’m not following. So they opt out of an extension. Isn’t this just then the standard timeline as if nothing changed? How does this become “early tenure”?" and it was so amazing to see our point stated so clearly.

Proud of my ND colleague & friend @mholla_back and my colleague & friend @mwelting! I went to a conference for women STEM faculty in July: these issues are PERVASIVE (bar-raising, policy leeway enabling discrimination, & the real cost extensions have on salary & career progress).
