If I knew what I knew now, I wouldn't have raised venture capital." This is what a founder friend told me the last time we caught up. Two big headaches he's facing: 🥵 sheer weariness from fundraising every year for the past 12 years ❌ constant challenge of meeting sky-high targets after his recent growth equity round And he's one of the lucky ones who has taken some "chips off the table." The fact is that for many founders, the VC path becomes a death spiral, leaving them broken with nothing to show for it That's why we've put together a framework to help founders think through their options and escape the VC hypergrowth model Give it a read if you're on the venture path, thinking of it, or just want to know how venture really works💡 Details below 👇🏽 @23milecapital

@NaijaFlyingDr @cremechic11 True In fairness to tech founders, building a product is almost as important and most times has to be advanced before finding paying customers Makes it 10x harder to succeed with tech than traditional businesses

When a business is new, the most difficult and important task is finding customers who will pay for the product. Because this is high-stress and involves a high risk of rejection, founders often pivot to "low-stakes" work.

@Adheydayor @cremechic11 I’ll take a stab, my insights are around the financing structure not the ultimate 1. Not predicated on billion dollar exits 2. Focus on capital efficiency, def not scale or die. 3. Meaning high emphasis on profitability

going through Linkedin and every other post is roughly: "the silicon valley vc model does not work in Africa" I'd love to know the financing model that works for early stage, no traction, no PMF startups in Africa.

Holy Moses he’s built different. If it’s easy, you didn’t go hard enough. Go til it hurts. Push. I only know a few ceos who run their business this way. And guess what. They’re winning.

@SteveWiesnerSMB Hi Steve, full 12mm rupture Traumatic but glad to be back on my feet. But it takes so much time to recover fully. I’ve taken it as a one year set back

Raising venture capital increases your chances of failure This is a reality many founders don't want to internalise If you're a venture backed founder in the UK, come join a session to discuss options for founders stuck after raising initial rounds See details below

Maybe the hardest jump in venture - from Series A to B. In the boom times: - 20% got there in 1 year - 40%+ got there in 2 years today: - 10% get there in a year - 19% in 2 years not easy!

The biggest misconception people have of 20VC: I started the podcast and then moved into investing. No. I loved investing since I was a very young. I thought venture was increasingly commoditised. I realised you had to be different. I thought attention was the currency of the future. Blending media and investing was the most obvious route. We leverage media to be the best investors. Simple.

Social media and Hollywood sold us on the idea of 22 year old billionaires who dropped out of college It happens but these are extreme outliers According to MIT research, the average age of a successful startup founder is 45. Why? Domain expertise matters more than youth My latest guest James, put his money where his mouth is by founding the world's only fund investing in experienced founders

Build a business you're passionate about they said... I learnt the hard way that passion alone can't pay the bills, leave that for the movies Passion + viable field + skill is a great way to think about entrepreneurship and also careers ✅ Ikigai 👀 It's tough to get it 💯 right all the time, it's okay to choose different strategies per time Theoretical concept or have you found this useful in career planning or building a business?
