Before I even knew his name, Harry Donahue was one of the voices of my childhood. Every snow day morning was spent with the living room radio tuned to KYW hoping to hear “307” called and have the day off from school. In my very first game after being hired at Temple in 2015, I had Harry’s voice in my ear as I sat in the Linc editing highlights of Temple’s first win over Penn State in 74 years. Sitting in a hotel lobby on a basketball road trip in Puerto Rico listening to Harry and John Baum tell war stories about life on the road (John Chaney telling the radio crew “you’re non-essential!” was a favorite and often-repeated line) was a peek into a world I had coveted since I was old enough to remember. To be associated for one program over a span of several decades is, to me, the pinnacle of this profession. I feel a responsibility every time I’m referred to as the “Voice of the Temple Owls” to live up to the standard Harry set. Harry was, is, and will always be “essential” to Temple. Rest in peace.
