It would be no fun for us wearing a fluffy jumper in a heatwave so how must it feel for our fuzzy #bumblebees?! Help @The_Buzz_Club and @yanetsepulveda understand more about how our warming climate and extreme weather events affect bees. #ClimateChange #CitizenScience

Bees & Heatwaves 2024 is now OPEN! Join us to investigate how bees respond to summer temperatures and extreme weather events. From your own garden, you can contribute to crucial research and help create guides to support pollinators in a warming world. @The_Buzz_Club @DaveGoulson

@LymWild @NewForestFruit I have a suspicion it might depend on *what* birds go after the strawberries. I think blackbirds aren't fooled, but little birds might be...
English

@LymWild @NewForestFruit Fantastic! They seem to work so well for you, but were variable across the board - I wonder why?

Spent an enjoyable 10 minutes in the sun preparing strawberry rocks as ripening begins @Newforestfruit I think this is our fourth year of strawberry rocks @LJBees?

Cool find during some pond maintenance by our @SummerwoodComm1 volunteers - caddis fly cases! The larvae use silk to bind together bits of stick, stones and other debris to make a protective case. This one even has some pearl mussels hanging out on it! #insects #wildlifegardening

@donnyfarmshop @The_Buzz_Club @DaveGoulson @Kate_Bradbury Ooh nice! I've managed to get hairy footed flower bees sheltering in my bee hotel, but I think they're just chilling in the proverbial foyer. Now, where to find clay... 🐝 🌺

English

Wonderful! Can't wait to try this myself, what a lovely time of year 🐝🌻🌸🌺

@Blue14Dragon Not likely to be interested in a house / shed unless they are somehow... really sweet? 😂
English

@Blue14Dragon Heyo! I don't think they're living *in* the tree, just using existing channels in the bark to go up and down. There are likely LOTS of aphids (which secrete honeydew, a sugary liquid) up the tree - or sweet birch sap leaking from a wound - and the ants are foraging for it.
English

@Blue14Dragon If it's a bonanza of sweet stuff, the ants will have recruited loads of nestmates to go harvest too.

@inftjazzloop @B_Strawbridge @susie_dent I mean, it's a bit more dramatic than 'nectar robbing'.
Bumbleheist
Beecheat
Pollenscam 😆
English

@B_Strawbridge Paging @susie_dent - Why is it called Larceny?
English

Buff-tailed #bumblebee collecting nectar from salvia. Look closely & you’ll see she’s not using the entrance to the flower (tongue too short) but is ‘robbing’ the nectar through a hole at its base. This is known as ‘larceny’!
She’s a worker, so there must be a winter nest nearby
