Friends who run lovely deli say footfall right down this year. Lots of people using cash and clearly on a budget. Cost of commercial electricity is crippling. Three retailers in town closing before NICs and minimum wage go up in new year. And an unmerry Christmas to you @RachelReevesMP

@AllisonPearson Energy costs are way out of control now, with the UK having the most expensive electricity. This is self-inflicted, from having no serious energy policy for 30 years, to Mad Ed and his obsession with "leading the world" which no-one is following.

I will never name schools or teachers who tell me what is happening in their schools. This stuff is definitely taught to secondary kids - you seem ok with that - 11 year olds. I find that shocking. I know it is available in a handful of schools which are primary. I lost my livelihood for telling the truth. I won’t do that to people. And it is wrong of you to ask me to do so. Did you believe in furries when they were first mentioned on social media by people like me? Did you believe me in 2010 when I spoke about the broken education system and the lies we tell about it? You can believe what you like of course. But if you never believe people who have no cause to lie and in fact risk much to tell the truth, then I would say you have an issue.

I don’t know. Not only do some people think it is normal, they genuinely think you are a right-wing extremist for opposing this. And then there are those who just stay silent about it because they don’t want to rock the boat. 😳
Dr. Simon Goddek@goddek

If you oppose these kinds of books being read in primary schools today, you're instantly branded a right-wing extremist and a bigot. How can anyone think this is normal?

@DickWinchester @MerrynSW Home solar may be a useful addition for domestic use but not for a steel works or a hospital or office block. Solar can never power an industrial nation, wherever you put the panels. If you think otherwise I have a bridge you may be interested in.

@TheRealRolfster @askquantum @MerrynSW Tell that to the countries with over 90% renewable power and don’t tie prices to the cost of fossil fuel. As a constantly inward looking country we continually miss out on global progress.

@askquantum @MerrynSW We can keep on using gas until we commission the nuclear plant. Round trip conversion efficiency for hydrogen is very poor. We will need massive overbuild of wind and solar to accommodate it. It’s pie in the sky.

@MikeTho04795078 @AllisonPearson @bbcnickrobinson Globally, Solar accounted for 78% of new renewable capacity last year. Solar’s share was up 12 percentage points from the 66% contributed in 2022 and 22 percentage point more than the 56% in 2021. Like it or not, it's the future.

In interview with @bbcnickrobinson, Ed Miliband was deluded, arrogant and condescending about his clean energy disaster. Blaming war in Ukraine won’t wash. Why does UK have highest energy costs in developed world? How can we have energy security based on wind and solar? It’s total madness. And will ruin the countryside. @BBCr4today @Ed_Miliband
Bernie@Artemisfornow

ENERGY - Britain now has the highest energy costs in the developed world. History shows that no nation can prosper without affordable, reliable energy. Cheap energy is not a luxury; it’s the foundation upon which modern economies are built. We are at the crumbling stage 🤡

The SW1 commentariat's reaction to Jenrick and Badenoch's success yesterday shows that it still inhabits a cosy little bubble in which anyone or anything that runs contrary to its own narrow liberal-centrist worldview is immediately branded dangerous or illegitimate.

@DAaronovitch I can't imagine being so affected by politics that I'd softly indicate pleasure about an area flooding, based on who its MP is. Doesn't seem healthy.

@alkapranos @TheRAC_UK @RAC_Care Same with me...all night in freezing weather on the M25 hard shoulder, and a daughter sliding into hypothermia, with continual reassurances of an hour, tops. Nothing works anymore!

Hi @TheRAC_UK @RAC_Care. I've been waiting to be picked up from a motorway breakdown for 7 hours. Your operators don't seem to know what is going on. Or say trucks have been dispatched when they haven't. Is this normal? Is this my life now? Waiting for the truck that never comes?

Rishi Sunak, asked whether Tories would withdraw from ECHR, says he's been "crystal clear". "If I'm forced to choose between securing our borders and our country's security or a foreign court, I'm going to choose our country's security every single time." Not entirely sure that *is* crystal clear 🤷‍♀️ Keir Starmer says he won't pull out of international agreements because he doesn't want UK to be "pariah" on global stage.
