🟥🔴✨RM had a plan 10 years ago for SWIM?
Is it just a coincidence — or part of a long-term vision from 10 years ago?
The title track of BTS’s fifth full-length comeback album, ARIRANG, is “Swim,” written by leader RM.
BigHit Entertainment explained the song as:
“It captures the mindset of continuing forward without stopping, even amid the waves of life — expressing the will to calmly swim at one’s own pace through the incoming current.”
Around a decade ago, RM had already shared an idea that closely resembles the concept behind “Swim.” BTS appeared in an exclusive interview for the May 16, 2017 anniversary issue of Sports Kyunghyang.
At the time, BTS were in the middle of their second world tour, The Wings Tour. Marking about four years since debut, the members were asked what they might be doing if they hadn’t become BTS — and what they envisioned for themselves 10 years into the future.
RM, then promoting under the name “Rap Monster,” answered:
“I think I would’ve just been a business student. Ten years from now, I hope I’ll be making music and performing in a more relaxed state, after the waves have passed.”
That idea — being at ease after the waves have passed — aligns almost perfectly with the message of “Swim.”
Whether this is coincidence or part of RM’s long-term creative planning (he’s known for carefully managing lyric notes and ideas), it seems that the title track of BTS’s upcoming global album was subtly foreshadowed in that interview 10 years ago.
And it’s not just the theme of “Swim” that became reality.
Back then, RM named Tablo and Younha as artists he wanted to collaborate with.
He later worked with Tablo on “All Day” (from RM’s 2022 solo album Indigo) and Tablo’s single “Stop The Rain.”
With Younha, he featured on “Winter Flower” (2020) and also participated as a speaker in her 20th anniversary project.
Jin, meanwhile, said he dreamed of collaborating with Coldplay — and in 2021, that dream became reality with the global hit “My Universe.”
They dreamed — and through relentless effort, turned those dreams into reality.
