She was 12 years old when she realized that people were dying because doctors couldn't check their DNA fast enough—so she wrote a computer program that could do it in seconds instead of hours. Her name is Sofia Tomov. And at age 12, she decided that if the world's leading scientists couldn't solve a problem fast enough, she'd solve it herself. The problem: doctors prescribe medication without knowing how a patient’s DNA will react. Hidden mutations can make the drugs dangerous—even deadly. Adverse drug reactions kill over 100,000 Americans each year. Fourth leading cause of death. More than car accidents. More than diabetes. Sequencing a patient’s genome seems like the solution. But the human genome has six billion base pairs. Analyzing it takes hours. Sometimes days. For someone having a heart attack or seizure, that’s too long. People die waiting. The smartest scientists had tried for years. They couldn’t solve it. Sofia did. She wrote an algorithm that could scan a genome for dangerous drug-reaction mutations in seconds instead of hours. She wasn’t just interested in computers—she wanted to save lives. At eleven, she filed a patent for a device that safely disposes of medications to protect water supplies. At twelve, she tackled a problem that had stumped the world. She studied genetics, learned which mutations affect drug metabolism, and coded a program that could identify risks fast enough for emergencies. Her algorithm focused on the critical DNA regions, used machine learning, and optimized speed without losing accuracy. In 2016, she entered the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge. She competed against thousands, many older. She made the finals with her life-saving algorithm. Sofia’s vision is global. Every patient’s genome could be sequenced. Doctors could know instantly which medications are safe. Lives saved. She showed that age doesn’t determine impact. Credentials don’t determine value. You need research, understanding, and courage to act. Sofia saw a problem killing thousands every year and thought: “I can fix that.” And she did. At twelve.

She pretended not to understand. He had no idea she was reading his every word. The Gestapo officer leaned forward, his questions sharp and deliberate. The elderly woman in the nun's habit sat across from him, her face blank, tilting her head with gentle confusion. He spoke louder. She watched his mouth move with patient incomprehension. Frustrated, he gathered his papers and left. What he didn't know was that Princess Alice of Battenberg — great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria, born profoundly deaf in Windsor Castle — was one of Europe's most skilled lip-readers. She had just read every syllable in four languages. She was also hiding a Jewish family upstairs. Born in 1885 into the highest ranks of European royalty, Alice never heard a single sound. But her parents refused to treat her deafness as a limitation. They taught her to lip-read in English, German, French, and Greek. They raised her to see the world not through what she lacked, but through what she could become. And she became extraordinary. During the Balkan Wars, she left her young children and worked on the front lines, setting up field hospitals and operating through the night. King George V awarded her the Royal Red Cross. She married Prince Andrew of Greece. They had five children — four daughters and a son named Philip, born on a kitchen table in Corfu in 1921. Then everything collapsed. A military coup forced her family into exile. Her husband was sentenced to death and barely escaped. They fled to Paris with nothing. Baby Philip was carried aboard a British warship in a crib made from an orange crate. Exile broke her marriage. In 1930, at forty-five, she suffered a severe breakdown. Her family committed her to a Swiss sanatorium against her will. She spent years trying to escape. She finally did. By the late 1930s, she had returned to Athens alone, converted to Greek Orthodoxy, and was living in a small apartment wearing a nun's gray habit. Her children were scattered across Europe. Philip was in the British Navy. Her daughters had married German nobles — her sons-in-law were now fighting for Hitler. She had lost nearly everything. When the Nazis occupied Athens in 1941, Princess Alice stayed. The Cohen family — Greek Jews, longtime friends of the royal family — were in desperate danger. By 1943, the roundups had begun. Sixty thousand Greek Jews would be murdered. Rachel Cohen, recently widowed, and her two children had nowhere left to hide. Alice opened her door. She moved them into her residence without telling anyone. For over a year, Rachel, Tilde, and Michael lived hidden in the palace while the Nazi occupation raged outside. Alice visited them regularly, drinking tea with Rachel, talking about faith and family and the small rituals that sustain hope when the world has gone dark. She sold what remained of her jewelry to buy food — not just for the Cohens, but for the starving neighborhood around her. She moved through occupied Athens in her habit, distributing medicine through the Red Cross, hiding in plain sight. The Gestapo grew suspicious. Neighbors whispered. Officers came asking questions. One day they came directly to the palace. And Princess Alice — who had spent her entire life watching people's lips to survive — sat down and played the role of a confused, deaf old woman with flawless conviction. She understood every word. She answered nothing. He left. The Cohens stayed until Athens was liberated in October 1944. After the war, Alice appeared briefly at her son Philip's wedding to Princess Elizabeth in 1947 — a gray figure at the edge of the photographs, already fading back to Greece. She founded a nursing order in a poor Athens suburb. She kept working. Kept giving everything away. In 1967, a military coup forced her to leave Greece forever. Philip sent a plane. She came to Buckingham Palace reluctantly, in failing health, and died there two years later She was eighty-four. She owned nothing. She had given it all away (More story in replies )

A final piece of advice from Holly Butcher - written the day before she passed away from cancer at just 27: “It’s a strange thing knowing you’re going to die young. At 26, I thought I had time… To fall in love. Start a family. Grow old. But cancer doesn’t care about plans. Now, I understand how fragile life really is. Every single day is a gift, not a guarantee. I’m not writing this to scare you. I’m writing to remind you: really live. Stop stressing over little things. Be kind to your body- move it, nourish it, stop criticizing it. One day you’ll wish you had appreciated it. Go outside. Look at the sky. Feel the sun. Just be. Spend less time chasing “stuff” - more time making memories. Don’t skip moments with people you love. Laugh more. Write a note. Tell someone you love them. Complain less. Give more. Helping others brings more joy than anything you can buy. Be present. Put your phone down. Show up - really show up. You don’t need to have it all figured out. You don’t need a perfect body, or a perfect life. Just follow what makes your heart light up. Say no to what drains you. Make changes when you need to. And please - donate blood. I wouldn’t have had that extra year without it. And that year gave me memories I’ll hold close… forever. Thank you for reading this. Live your life well. And maybe… we’ll meet again someday.” Holly 🩷 Repost & share Holly’s important advice. ❤️
