Statement on April 28, 2026 by the family of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya: Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya's detention has been extended without charge and without time limit, despite his deteriorating health. The family of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya confirms that Israeli authorities continue to detain him under procedures devoid of legal basis, on the grounds that he fulfilled his medical and humanitarian duty and refused to abandon his patients. In this context, the Beersheba District Court this morning approved the extension of his detention under the so-called "illegal combatants" law, without any formal charges being brought against him and without setting a time limit for his detention. The court also rejected the defense's request for immediate release, despite the fact that he was detained while performing his duties as a doctor. According to Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya’s lawyer, he is currently being held in the Negev prison in difficult conditions, where he is deprived of his basic medications and is not receiving the necessary medical care, despite the continued deterioration of his health. The family stresses that his continued detention without charge and the denial of medical care constitute a serious violation of international humanitarian law and endanger his life. The family reiterates its demand for the immediate and unconditional release of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, so that he may receive urgent medical care and his lawyer may meet with him without restriction.
