A few spots of rain for the east coast of the North Island as a subtropical low-pressure system narrowly skirts offshore, directing moisture laden southeasterly winds onto the land. These winds strengthen as they squeeze past East Cape. Loads of sunshine in the west of the North Island, and cloud burning off about Canterbury as a ridge of high pressure settles in. Tomorrow, its Canterbury’s turn to be clogged in cloud as the winds turn more southerly, with some showers and drizzle about the High Country and foothills. For your local forecast: metservice.com

🌧️ A frontal band of rain is pushing northwards across the South Island today. Some heavier bursts possible for the west coast, as well as inland Canterbury from this afternoon, but it's expected to be more scattered in the east. This front will become slow-moving and gradually weaken through the second half of the day. 🌤️ It’s a different story for the North Island, expecting plenty of fine spells after areas morning low cloud or fog clear. 🔍 🌤️Looking at the satellite image (night microphysics) from this morning we can see that there is a mixture of clear skies (pink) ☀️ and areas of low cloud or fog (lime green) 🌫️ to begin with. As the temperature continues to rise, we are expecting the cloud to lift and break up with plenty of sunshine for most of the country. However, the high cloud (red) observed to the southwest is an indicator of a new approaching frontal system. This is expected to bring showers 🌦️ through the afternoon for the southwestern South Island, turning to rain overnight 🌧️. ⚠️ 🟡🌧️There is a Yellow Heavy Rain Watch for Fiordland (west of the Lakes) from 10pm tonight (Tuesday) through until tomorrow morning. 🌤️ Week Ahead Weather Outlook 🌤️ A mostly settled start to the week is expected across much of the country, thanks to a ridge of high pressure over the Tasman Sea. The North Island should see plenty of fine and dry weather through the early part of the week, with sunny spells in many places. Good news for the cricket in Hamilton on Tuesday. 🏏 In the South Island, a weakening front moves northwards midweek, bringing periods of rain, especially to western areas. Fiordland is under a Heavy Rain Watch from late Tuesday into Wednesday morning. Conditions should improve again by Thursday as high pressure builds back in. Later in the week, a low passing northeast of the country may bring some cloud and occasional rain to Tairāwhiti Gisborne and northern Hawke’s Bay, but the chance of significant impacts remains very low. Overall, a mix across the country settled in the north and wetter midweek in the south, with sunshine still expected for many main centres. ☀️

Warm last night? Overnight temperatures stayed near 20°C in many places in Northland and Auckland - a muggy one for sure! Chances are you won't be needing that extra blanket tonight either, with another warm and muggy night expected

Did the wind keep you awake last night? The strongest gusts in the last 24 hours all happened between 6pm and 1am, in exposed parts of Northland and Auckland 💨 Things have eased off overnight, but it's still pretty blustery - stay safe out there!

Windy Wednesday! (OK, and Thursday...) The strongest winds are forecast for the Far North, but strong easterlies also affect the rest of Northland and Auckland during Wednesday and Thursday - it doesn't have to be a severe gale to be a noticeably windy day 🍃
