@BaldingsWorld NATO provides the US with bases that can only be used to defend NATO. It's like a battery charger that only charges its own batteries!

Serious question: while I would like an actual alliance let me ask how does NATO in any way impact US power projection? Neither NATO or Europe provide anything to US power projection globally. How does NATO or even Europe impact that?
Thorsten Benner@thorstenbenner

US withdrawing from NATO would be an act of self-harm in terms of global power projection but that's not reason for why this won't happen. Europeans need to prepare for a scenario in which the Mike Lees have majority in Congress. Just saying "Trump can't withdraw" doesn't cut it.

@james_jimm96174 @BaldingsWorld State media is always saying Communism is winning and capitalism is losing. But reality shows Capitalist countries are better off and communist countries sink into poverty. Communism retreats (but they tell us it's winning) and capitalism advances (but they tell us it's losing.)

So here is the Acela Corridor Galaxy Brain argument for China as I understand it: 1. China is boosting consumption 2. China will become a reserve currency 3. US does nothing in Latin America, China wins 4. US works goes Monroe Doctrine, China wins 5. US does nothing in the Middle East, China wins 6. US becomes security partners with most Middle Eastern states, China wins I think I have the basics of the argument and I must say it is a flawless brilliant argument other than being completely wrong

@RambleAndPint Americans fought a little thing called the War of Independence so they wouldn't have to "sit down and listen" to the British. Then they fought a little thing called World War Two so the British would have to sit down and listen to them. And you think your bitching will undo that?

How do we arm Europe quickly and build up a massive European defence Industry so we can be safe from Russia? The answer is: We cant. Not quickly. Sputhern Europe is still sleeping but Northern and Baltic Europe is wide awake and armring like hell. Several countries are now spending significantly more of GDP on defence than the USA. Finland is already strong and Poland is very close to being ready. The rest are on their way. But we need more time. Five-ten years from now, we will not need to fear Russia. They will be outmatched. But right now, Russia is a real danger. So what do we do? There are only two options: 1) Try to keep the USA as an ally for as long as possible until we are ready. That means keep stroking Trump’s ego and humiliate ourselves Marc Rutte style. Accept extortion, insults, threats and concessions while calling Trump “Daddy” and giving him made up peace prizes. The problem is: Even that is not going to work. Regardless of what we do, Trump and his gang will want new humiliations every week. Giving in to a ridiculously unfair trade deal did not make the USA friendlier to Europe. Doubling defence spending has not made them less hostile to Europe either. Nothing will. They hate Europe, support Russia and cant be won over. They will not be there for us, and Russia knows it. That leaves only one option: 2) Support Ukraine like our lives depend on it because they do. As long as Ukraine stand between Europe and Russia, we are safe. Russia can not even take Donbas from Ukraine and would be in way over their heads if they also had to fight the Nordic countries, Poland, Germany, France, Britain and Canada in Eastern Europe. We must demand that EVERYBODY in Europe contribute. No more free-riding from Italy, Spain and France. Not a eurocent in subsidies from the EU to traitors like Hungary and Slovakia before they also join. It is real. This is not a drill. It is time to step up. We can easily do it and I am confident, that we will. Glory to Ukraine and glory to Europe.

@ZoomerHistorian There is a big difference, though: Americans are the descendants of the Europeans that left and built empires. Europeans are the descendants of Europeans who stayed comfy at home. Not exactly the same stock.

It is easy to forget that you are simply Europeans on another continent, do not let the hubris of Empire lead you into forgetting that. We did the same thing with Europe when we ruled the world, it's silly. We're all in this together and want the same thing buddy, drop the weird tone and us vs them mentality. We all love Americans here and want the best for them, people just have very legitimate criticisms about the American Government (past and present), don't take it personally.

My genuine advice to the European right (such that it exists) is to lean into the anti-American sentiment. That’s your path to power. You need an ‘oppressor’ to fight against. One that moderate voters already want to hate. And the obvious rhetorical choice is America. Who’s responsible for the European migrant crisis? Not Europeans! It’s those damn Americans who caused chaos in the Middle East and forced you to accept 50M migrants (don’t worry about proving the “forced” part, people will believe it because they want to). Who’s responsible for the European energy crisis? Not Europeans! It’s those damn Americans who pushed climate change and anti-nuclear narratives to deindustrialize Europe and keep it weak and dependent (don’t worry that Russia actually funded your Green parties, it’s more fun to blame America, so people will). What about NATO? Here’s where it gets tricky, so follow along closely: America didn’t create NATO to protect you from the Soviet Union, it created NATO to keep you weak and enslave you. But also, Donald Trump wants to leave NATO because he wants to keep you weak and enslave you. Does that seem like a contradiction? It doesn’t matter. Your voters want to believe both, so they will. Ukraine War? America forced Russia’s hand. Strait of Hormuz? America closed it. Fertility crisis? America psyop’d you into thinking the world was overpopulated. It works for everything. Blame America and watch the communists and Islamists start nodding along. Blame America even harder than they do and watch your rankings shoot up in the polls. Just don’t start believing it yourselves. Never get high on your own supply. A strong, self-confident Europe is good for both Europe and America. So if you ever actually get back to that and stand up and peer out across the wide world for a friend, there across the pond, your old pal America will be waiting.

@polidemitolog Oh, no, no. Trump warned you about buying Russian oil. You laughed to his face. Biden warned you about Russia invading Ukraine. You didn't believe him until it happened. Every US president warned you against de-militarizing. The dildo of consequences rarely arrives lubed.

Just for the record - Europe didn't invade Ukraine and asked for America's help, Russia invaded Ukraine and put European security at risk. Biden was there for Europe, Trump abandoned it. Trump and Netanyahu decided to strike a final blow against Iran, without consulting any allies. In doing so they weakened Iran but caused a global energy crisis. Nothing there is Europe's responsibility. If you want to play the role of the global desperado, don't come crying back when things get tough.

What's bizarre is that if this post is true, why did America blowing up Nordstream not turn Europeans against Joe Biden but the Hormuz strait being closed has turned them against Trump?
Carl Benjamin 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿@Sargon_of_Akkad

America blew up the Nordstream pipeline, and now has closed the Strait of Hormuz. Hard not to see this as a deliberate strategy of denying energy to Europe, whilst America can produce its own. Callous.

@Frid45 Russia can't conquer Ukraine, but it has made life a living hell. The US can't control Iran, but it can destroy anything it wants in the country with virtual immunity. Can Europe be conquered? Of course not. But that's a very low bar. Did you stop and think before posting this?

- Russia 🇷🇺 spends $150B on its military and can’t defeat Ukraine. - The US 🇺🇸 spends $1T on its military and can’t control Iran. And some still think Europe 🇪🇺, with a combined military budget of $400B+ and two nuclear powers, is an easy target? Europe is far from defenseless!

Please, please...leave NATO It doesn't work at the moment because the strongest military member is helping Russia NATO was formed to confront Russia, remember ? But once Putin got kompromat on Trump. America changed sides So now NATO doesn't work because its strongest military member is working for the enemy Good bye. Please
@

SECRETARY RUBIO: Why are we in NATO? You have to ask that question. Why do we send trillions of dollars and have all of these American forces stationed in the region, if in our time of need, we won't be allowed to use those bases?

Europeans gave lives in two US wars that were badly conceived and executed. They now have a US president who openly sides with their major continental enemy, a man who has threatened the annexation of one Nato member and the invasion of another. This is a difference of philosophy?
Melissa Chen@MsMelChen

Let’s be real here. Europe has spent decades freeloading on American security. Even now, with every NATO member finally hitting the 2% GDP target in 2025. But beyond the financial contributions, the real rupture is philosophical and the Iran crisis has shown a spotlight on it. Europe worships process. Endless committees, consultations, and “predictability.” Macron actually calls it a virtue. For Trump, this is paralysis as his style is to articulate a threat, fix a target, and act. The Americans are men of conviction and purpose. Europe on the other hand lives by bureaucratic liturgy and in high-minded abstractions. Sure, Americans might make mistakes when acting. But Europe never considers what the costs of not acting actually are. Just look at how their nations are doing on various fronts, especially on the border crisis, and you see the same cancerous rot that undergirds their foreign policy approach play out domestically. It's the same problem on a different scale. Iran is currently holding the Strait of Hormuz hostage, choking 20% of global oil and spiking prices past $100 a barrel. Meanwhile, the regime is bleeding from strikes, its nuclear ambitions are still alive despite degraded capability, and its proxies are firing missiles at allies and oil tankers. If this isn’t a clear and present danger to the global economy - of which Europe is a part - then I don’t know what is. Yet when Washington asked to use European bases to finish the job - bases the US has defended for generations, the response was hesitation and hand-wringing. The US did strike from RAF Fairford, but only after warnings that British soil could become a “legitimate target.” If you cannot agree that a theocratic regime with eschatological ambitions who have shown no restraint in hitting out at Gulf countries and threatening the world’s energy jugular is an enemy worth confronting, then what, exactly, are we allies about? Europe loves to preen about being tough on Russia. They issue condemnations and speeches and slap sanctions that hardly work to cripple the Russian economy. Now here was a chance to do something concrete: let the Americans use the bases they already pay for, help clear the Strait, and actually degrade the Iranian war machine that arms Moscow’s proxies. Turmp didn’t ask for boots on the ground or any kind of more offensive action. All he wanted was permission to operate from the infrastructure America has underwritten for decades. They couldn’t even manage that. So can you blame the Americans for seeing NATO for what it is? A paper-tiger alliance that expects Washington to bleed and pay while Brussels and London convenes and deliberates. If Europe refuses to treat Iran as the threat it is while happily letting American power keep the Strait open and the lights on, then the alliance is already dead. Trump is simply stating the obvious and the Americans are becoming very reluctant to subsidize the European delusion any longer.
