This is a First Communion picture of yours truly. It was taken mid-June 1980 as I recall. A month after, I had corrective surgery to repair damage done to me from an HPV infection, which was the result of my trafficking and rape. The suit I'm wearing was loaned to me. It belonged to my best friend, Jamie. His father Jimmy was the man who raped, broke and infected my tiny body. When I look at this picture, I don't see Sacrament, Christ or celebration. Just abuse, the destruction of innocence and suffering that rippled out for decades into that little boy's future. Child sexual abuse steals everything. Even that which was meant to be Holy. I'm not looking for sympathy. I want my suffering to wake people up and make sure they are doing their part to ensure this doesn't happen to any more children. Child abuse is a demonic hate crime and if you are turning a blind eye to it in your own life, community or the culture as a whole. You are failing as a Christian. Do better. The children deserve it.
