Western Sydney University’s Professor Sebastian Pfautsch, from the Urban Transformations Research Centre and @westsydusoss, worked with @cityofsydney to map the region’s microclimates, through the most detailed analysis of urban heat ever carried out in the area. The hottest day observed was 9 December 2023 where a high of 45.3°C was observed in St Peters, while at the same time just a short distance away temperatures in the Botanic Gardens were 30°C. 🌡️ Read more 👉tinyurl.com/5djvyus2

VC Distinguished Professor George Williams AO (@ProfGWilliams) writes for @Meanjin today, stating, “Universities must win back the community’s trust and respect by demonstrating their value and contribution to society. This starts by remembering that universities are public institutions, not corporations. They exist for the public good." Read the full article: tinyurl.com/npfnxxuc

I'd support a Republic only if it was as simple as making our Governer General a "President" and that's it. We have one of the most stable democracies in the World, we really shouldn't mess with it. No Presidential elections, no additional powers...

I am enormously privileged to be appointed as the fifth Vice-Chancellor of @westernsydneyu. WSU's commitment to making higher education available to all is inspiring, as is its deep connection to Western Sydney’s remarkable growth and development. westernsydney.edu.au/newscentre/new…

@jeremy_gans It also may not be supported by a head of power, but state laws in this area may be possible.

@ProfGWilliams What would be the constitutional objection to (say) a federal law that provided for preventative detention of NZYQ-cohort where a court found that their past offences pose an unacceptable risk etc?

NZYQ at [72]: detention possible where removal again a real prospect or on grounds of preventative detention such as child sex offenders with an unacceptable risk of reoffending. If not the first ground, they need to be treated like anyone else. This may be a matter of state law.

@jeremy_gans Federal law could run counter to Lim: exceptional cases aside, the involuntary detention of a citizen in custody by the State is penal or punitive in character and exists only as an incident of the exclusively judicial function of adjudging and punishing criminal guilt.

NZYQ unusual for a major constitutional case. One judgment and one voice on the key issues (with an aside from Edelman J) and mercifully short at 26 pages. Little new scope for preventative detention and will encourage those challenging the latest bill. www8.austlii.edu.au/cgi-bin/viewdo…
