@TedWelford I noticed new BMW SUV’s now have illuminated front grills. I’ve been a BMW fan since my father brought 3.3li in the late 70’s and then 3.3 CSL. I’ve owned several over 40 years and loved all of them. The L huge grills were bad enough now illuminated, they’ve cheapened the brand

Bit late to the X5 party considering this one is soon to be replaced. But I am SO impressed. Easily one of the best SUVs I’ve ever driven, great hybrid system and one of those increasingly rare new cars that feel properly engineered. BMW UK’s number plate game is strong too…

@AutoPap Love places like this. In the 60’s my father took me for a salt beef sandwich in Edgware, still there run by the same Greek family, a favourite of the Jewish community. Last time I was there a couple of years ago it was exactly as I have remembered it for the last 56 years.

@1Percenterer In 2009 I bought a new X6 335d. Fantastic car . 286bhp, 750 NMT and most hated it, but both Mercedes and Porsche copied the design and others have followed. A BMW main dealership told me a few years ago that once they fitted a centre seatbelt in the X6, they outsold X5’s.

BMW E70 X5 M was an early proof that an SUV could behave like a serious performance car. The twin-turbo S63B44 V8 delivered about 547 hp, backed by a chassis tuned for speed rather than comfort. At the time many saw it as unnecessary and it was kind of a unicorn car when everyone else wasn't really into performance SUV's. If They we're, there was also the ML 63, Touareg R50, Q7 V12 TDI, Cayenne Turbo. Compared with modern performance SUVs it is superb for its looks, still very complicated and unreliable though. The E70 X5 M is overlooked because the idea became common, yet it was one of the cars that made the idea believable in the first place.

@Only9built Not cooler than a Daytona and 25 years ago they were cheap as chips a definite bargain next to a Daytona with the benefit of rear seats too. They’re no longer the bargain they were and I’d love to own one, maybe over a Daytona too.

@1Percenterer @grayheath56 I went to buy an Abarth cab for my wife some years ago. She complained she rear view, especially with the roof down, They were also an Alfa Romeo dealer, so we took a Mito for a test drive. I love Alfa’s, hated the Mito and everything about it.

Skoda Fabia vRS is one of the most technically ambitious small cars Skoda ever built. The twincharged 1.4 TSI in the MK2 used both a supercharger and a turbocharger to deliver low-end response and high-end power from a very small displacement. It was not chosen for simplicity or cost, but for efficiency and flexibility. Result was a respectable 176 Hp and 250 Nm of torque. That decision made the car feel far more complex than its size suggested. It also made it feel engineered rather than marketed. The Fabia vRS was never about image. It was about seeing how much performance and refinement could be extracted from a compact, rational platform.

The Touareg 4.0 TDI represents Volkswagen pushing diesel technology further than the rest of its range ever required. This V8 diesel was developed specifically for high-torque, high-load use in a luxury SUV format. It was heavy, complex and expensive, and it never filtered into other VW passenger models. It existed because the Touareg demanded it, not because the brand wanted a new engine family.

@AutoPap My father told me, never buy a new car. I haven’t followed that advice 100%, I think I’ve owned 3 new cars. These days, I look for cars that I will enjoy using and if the don’t loose money, that’s a bonus.

A lot of presumably paid influencers getting on the band wagon trying to convince people to financially invest in cars. Even the best investment I made wasn’t really that profitable after financing etc. In fact I’ve lost money on most cars even when I’ve sold them for more than I paid!
