डाकिये को यक़ीन नहीं हो रहा था कि एक छोटी सी लड़की उसके लिए इतना फ़िक्रमंद हो सकती है। अगले दिन डाकिया अपने डाकघर पहुंचा और उसने पोस्टमास्टर से फरियाद की कि उसका तबादला फ़ौरन दूसरे इलाक़े में कर दिया जाए। पोस्टमास्टर ने जब इसका कारण पूछा, तो डाकिये ने वे जूते टेबल पर रखते हुए सारी कहानी सुनाई और भीगी आँखों और रुंधे गले से कहा, " सर..आज के बाद मैं उस गली में नहीं जा सकूँगा। उस छोटी अपाहिज बच्ची ने मेरे नंगे पाँवों को तो जूते दे दिये पर मैं उसे पाँव कैसे दे पाऊँगा ?" इतना कहकर डाकिया फूटफूट कर रोने लगा ।

एक दिन एक बुजुर्ग डाकिये ने एक घर के दरवाजे पर दस्तक देते हुए कहा..."चिट्ठी ले लीजिये।" आवाज़ सुनते ही तुरंत अंदर से एक लड़की की आवाज गूंजी..." अभी आ रही हूँ...ठहरो।" लेकिन लगभग पांच मिनट तक जब कोई न आया तब डाकिये ने फिर कहा.."अरे भाई! कोई है क्या, अपनी चिट्ठी ले लो...मुझें औऱ बहुत जगह जाना है..मैं ज्यादा देर इंतज़ार नहीं कर सकता....।" लड़की की फिर आवाज आई...," डाकिया चाचा , अगर आपको जल्दी है तो दरवाजे के नीचे से चिट्ठी अंदर डाल दीजिए,मैं आ रही हूँ कुछ देर औऱ लगेगा । " अब बूढ़े डाकिये ने झल्लाकर कहा,"नहीं,मैं खड़ा हूँ,रजिस्टर्ड चिट्ठी है,किसी का हस्ताक्षर भी चाहिये।" तकरीबन दस मिनट बाद दरवाजा खुला।
