Thiel knows more than anyone that the dorms themselves are where wokeness happens - partly because the residential programming is controlled by extreme people, and also because the residential experience lends itself to cult formation.
It can be isolating to be thrust into this new social environment with entirely strangers far away from home. So these kinds of solidarity exercises - paired with the thread of ostracism - are very effective on weaker people.
One possible strategy is to divert funding toward commuter schools.
