It was one of the most significant outbreaks of violence in the early Reconstruction era following the Civil War. Historical Context: After the Civil War ended in 1865, Memphis became a hub for newly freed Black people seeking work and protection near federal troops. At the same time, the city's police force was largely composed of Irish immigrants who felt threatened by the economic competition and social changes. Tensions were high between the Black community (including Black Union veterans) and the local white authorities.
