There is nothing wrong with questioning the Bank of Ghana’s financial performance. Public institutions should be subject to scrutiny.
However, that scrutiny must be grounded in a proper understanding of the numbers. Adding OCI to the reported loss and presenting the result as the “true loss” may sound compelling, but it does not reflect how financial performance is defined.
OCI is not hidden. It is clearly disclosed. But it serves a different purpose from profit or loss.
The Bottom Line
The GHS 34.95 billion figure may make for a strong headline, but it is not an accurate representation of the Bank of Ghana’s loss for the year.
Understanding what each component of the financial statements represents is essential. Without that, it is easy to arrive at conclusions that overstate the situation rather than clarify it.
In matters of public finance, precision is not optional. It is necessary.
