Such an interesting discussion facilitated by @RunJOC this evening at our @IrishSESA event discussing all aspects of 'burnout' considering athletes and their support teams. @comyns_tommy opened the event announcing the 1st annual ISESA conference (May 23rd/24th '25 SETU ) 🎉

Exercise volume or intensity: which is more important for promoting training adaptations? 🫀🫁 A recent meta-analysis explores this question & provides evidence on how training variables influence mitochondrial content, capillarization, and VO2 max. Let’s explore. 👇🏼

@CiDeely @EamonnFlanagan I think it’s really exciting from a sports science perspective. Don’t know from a traditional football perspective though

No I agree with that, completely (and that’s v interesting re Joe Schmidt). The GAA world is perhaps not there yet, so a lot of responsibility falls back on the S&C coach. Obviously technical coach and S&C need to dovetail together, and you’re right- a high level coach should be the main driver. GAA coach ed (with a new one being rolled out) has a lot of catching up to do in this area. @DeasunO & others have had a big role to play in this recently. It needed updating badly As an aside, I think the 3v3 inside players will be more focused on either max sprints/high end accels/decels…or a player who is more stationary who can physically dominate their player /the arena Will perhaps lead to more positional differentiation in players- in both physical capacity, power, and makeup

One thing for sure from tonight’s games…the S&C coach is going to become the most important person in the set up We need to be careful with that I think the gap between the best (Div 1) and the rest is going to grow & grow

@EamonnFlanagan @CiDeely I agree with you and @CiDeely Eamon and I would add that the communication between S&C and Technical Coaches will be the most important factor. They can collectively look at the demands and as you rightly say, the skills coach can deliver the stimulus via game specific drills

@CiDeely Great insight. But one would hope coaches can drive the adaptations needed for these specific fitness qualities. Shouldn't just be the domain of the S&C coach. Joe Schmidt is the best fitness coach I've ever seen. Demands beyond game intensity in game specific drills / play
