Someone recently told me an early investor passed on Runway because we didn’t go to stanford or have phds (we went to art school at nyu) and decided instead to invest in a competitor with phd people that were friends of friends.
Made me realize that building a good company depends heavily on your network. I think you can build networks in roughly two ways:
1) Where you move: The school you went to, places you worked at, where you grew up and go for vacation. Where you live now, who your friends are, who are the friends of your friends. Your family’s connections extending outward, etc.
2) What you do: You make something good and that attracts people to you.
Where you move is a huge advantage.Selling a product to a company is easier if the ceo is your friend or someone your family knows. Attracting talent or raising money is simpler when you rely on your school network and the network of companies you’ve worked at. Warm introductions help a ton.
What you do is much harder. You are judged purely by what you make, not by who you know. There’s no other way around it. No shortcuts or personal connections. Just what you make judged by the market.
Over time, I’ve realized that one of the strongest signals for evaluating long-term company performance is considering whether their momentum comes mostly from where you move or from what you do.
Where you move has limits. The advantages plateau. What you do compounds differently. Quality builds its own momentum, slowly at first, then exponentially.
Most successful companies use both. But the ratio matters a lot. What you do wins. Eventually.

@dotkrueger did you try gpt-oss-120b on the mac studio? People whine about it but I think it's fantastic to be able to run something like that with no internet. People complain too much
