House Republican Budget Leader Rep. Travis Couture, R-Allyn, released the following statement Tuesday after the state’s quarterly revenue forecast showed over $1 billion less revenue projected over the next four years: “They spent us into a deficit before the ink even dried. “Despite record-breaking revenues and more than $9 billion in new taxes, Democrats managed to spend every dime – and more. We’re now down to a $2 million balance in a $78 billion budget. That’s like a family making $78,000 a year and ending with just two bucks in the bank – one small surprise away from a crisis. “A $2 million cushion in a $78 billion budget is financial malpractice. “Revenue is still rising – just not fast enough to keep up with the spending binge. Slower growth in sales tax and real estate tax should have been a flashing red light. Instead, Democrats plowed ahead with the largest budget in state history, no cushion, no discipline, and no plan. “They doubled the budget in 10 years and still cut wildfire prevention, foster care, and care for the disabled – while funding legal aid for illegal immigrants and a taxpayer-funded reparations study. You can’t make this up. “Now the governor wants to dodge responsibility by blaming federal policy. That’s weak. This crisis was made in Olympia, not Washington, D.C. And if federal policy were truly to blame, how is it that neighboring states like Idaho and Montana are delivering better services, lower prices, and even tax relief – all under the same national conditions? The difference is leadership, not excuses. “We warned them. Editorial boards warned them. They didn’t listen. Now the red ink is flowing – and working families will pay the price. “It’s time for a serious course correction. Prioritize essentials. Cut the gimmicks. Stop using record revenue as an excuse to grow government like there’s no tomorrow – because tomorrow just showed up, and the bill is due.” #waleg

I guess every Washingtonian gets one free dog murder without going to jail. Our animal cruelty laws are unreal.

Bill that would toughen animal cruelty sentencing laws reaches House floor fox13seattle.com/news/bill-that…

Republican lawmakers are strongly opposed to the idea, saying it is the wrong time to consider such a measure at a time when violent crime is on the rise in Washington. kiro7.com/news/local/deb…

NEW: Bill proposed in #waleg would allow people imprisoned for felonies like rape and murder to be able to vote, serve on a jury, or run for office while still behind bars. Republicans ask if that includes people like the Green River Killer: 👇 Full story soon on @Mynorthwest

Great news from @WAStateCommerce! We will get a $16+ million grant to expand broadband access along the entire SR530 corridor from @ArlingtonWA to @DarringtonWa. This is progress for resident's health, education, businesses, and the environment. commerce.wa.gov/news-releases/…
