Musk pushes back on reports that Tesla staff were told to switch to Grok for internal AI work. He says Tesla and SpaceX were asked to “try out” Grok 4.5, not adopt it regardless of results, and should keep using other AI models if they perform better. The original reporting cited lower token costs as the driver.

The pitch is cost: Grok 4.5 runs about $0.13 per task vs $1.57 for the leading rival roughly 12x cheaper. Musk admits it’s not the strongest model, but says most work doesn’t need one.

Grok 4.5 launched Wednesday. Two days later it’s already the top-scoring orchestrator model on Perplexity’s benchmark beating OpenAI and Anthropic models at half the cost of some rivals.
AI is the segment analysts call the swing variable in the $SPCX story. Early third-party results like this are what that thesis needs.
