I joined @BBCBreaking anchor @SumiSomaskanda to discuss the U.S. operation that removed Nicolás Maduro from power in Venezuela. Maduro was an illegitimate and brutal ruler in a country where 82% of the population lives in poverty. But this was not an act of self-defense - and that distinction matters. Only Congress has a constitutional responsibility to authorize the use of force, not outsource that decision to the executive branch after the fact. America at her best is a reluctant warrior & I’ve seen firsthand as a captain in the 82nd Airborne in Iraq how regime change without a political plan can create instability that lasts decades. Venezuela employs 300K people tied to the state.
