I’ve read a few things recently that I have initially recoiled from because of an apparent forced certainty in the tone and title. X is wrong; Y is right Y (good thing) is totally different to X (worse thing) X (thing lots of people do) is a waste of time. Y ( thing I like doing) is way better. Most X is bad - except my version which is great. This over confidence around details of practice is off-putting but also has no actual roots in evidence beyond a person’s preferences and their evaluation of what they’ve personally observed. I know I’m probably guilty of sounding like this too. Unfortunately this tone - with its implicit critique of others - actually can overshadow the good ideas themselves. I re-read something just now mentally inserting a liberal dose of qualifying phrases and found it much easier to absorb: ‘my personal preference/interpretation is ..,’ ‘a routine I’ve found that seems to work well is… ‘ ‘As an alternative to X you might find Y works better… ‘ ‘One possible solution to A is to try B….’ This helps me not to get wound up by overconfident assertions and claims to superior practice. The nature of implementing educational research in practice is that multiple techniques can and do deliver on the same core principles. Maybe it’s up to readers to apply a filter of this type rather than expecting writers to constantly add these qualifying phrases - but one way or the other it’s worth pausing to dial down on certainty ..

Hate on me all you want but all five breaks except the summer are half term. Summer is the summer holidays. This upcoming holiday is more of a half term than Christmas though. I do not care to listen to reason, as I already know I am correct.

When did teacher’s attire take a turn? Teachers today dress like they are all teaching PE. Growing up all my teachers wore heels, dresses, slacks, dress shirts, hair was done. They looked put together. Teachers today look like they don’t care. the way you show up contributes to the environment you work in. this may be one of the factors into why kids behave the way they do. take the profession seriously so the kids can take you seriously

@adamboxer1 Maybe we should be using experienced, qualified coaches to deliver this. ‘Feedback’ can be perceived differently depending on who is ‘giving’ it. A better model would be to start with ‘quick wins’ so that more staff are onboard and positive…build up to wider/complex issues

This data is absolutely nuts, and reflects a lot of my concerns about observation based CPD (like coaching): Lots of teachers simply not understanding the feedback A majority not knowing *how* to do the thing or feeling capable of executing it (c.f. "When done well") A majority having no actual desire to do the thing Thank you @TeacherTapp for the data, and a reminder to download and engage with it!

While most secondary schools require students to wear blazers, nearly half of teachers would prefer young people to wear ‘joggers and a polo’ or no uniform, exclusive polling reveals tes.com/magazine/news/…

@TheNorfolkLion Things go round in circles. Schools went to polo shirts and sweat shirts 20 years ago then found out schools with smarts uniforms did better so switched back. The most popular oversubscribed schools in my area are ones with strict uniform and behaviour policies.

Look what this high school has done. They’ve got rid of the traditional uniform and now dress the students pretty much like supermarket workers! Anything to change and erase our culture.

@ShakinthatChalk I wholeheartedly agree with this! 🙌 The shirt/tie combo is restrictive and not conducive to being active in any way shape or form. You can be smart and comfy - look at Asian countries!
