Correct, and this is how pre-Vatican II Catholic moral theologians understood the application of the "lawful authority" condition of just war doctrine to the U.S. context. Here are some relevant passages, the first from Fr. Francis Collins' Outlines of Moral Theology, and the second from Fr. John McHugh and Fr. Charles Callan's Moral Theology: A Complete Course, Vol. I:

If you believe (as I believe amply justified) that this war required congressional approval under the Constitution, then it can't meet the just-war criterion of initiation by legitimate authority.

99% of arguments about discontinuity of Church teaching on other religions goes like this: "Past saint said X negative thing about them but recent pope said Y positive (but unrelated to X) thing about them."

"Certainly the struggles of battles and wars as well as the beginning of every quarrel are revealed by the fraud of the diabolic art, and the person who is desirous of expanding his kingdom and the lover of anger or envy or some other vice is proven to concentrate and take delight in these things alone. Therefore, if no necessity compels you, you should abstain from battles not only during Lent, but at all times. But if some unavoidable event drives you, you should without hesitation spare no preparation for war in defense of not only yourself but also your country and the laws of your fathers, lest man seem to tempt God, if he has the wherewithal and does not take care to take counsel for his own safety and the safety of others and does not take precautions against damage to the holy religion." -Pope St. Nicholas I, Letter 99, ch. 46

"I would not believe the Gospel if the authority of the Catholic Church did not move me." - St. Augustine Since the Reformation, the Protestant traditions (Lutheran, Reformed, and Anglican) have diluted this quote from St. Augustine to make it seem he was stating their view: the Church only introduced him to the Gospel and, by self-authentication, St. Augustine believed Scripture by its own testimony. In this video, I completely disprove that claim, citing Lutheran, Reformed, and Anglican scholastics, showing that St. Augustine held precisely to the Catholic view of epistemology and authority. Lutheran (Gerhard, Calovius, Quenstedt, etc.) objections aren’t the knockout punches they’re made out to be. Catholics, especially Dominicans and Jesuits, have already done the work. We’ve got answers for every one of them.

In my high biology class we dissected pig fetuses and the woke pro-choice girls were all “is this ethical?”

Hot take: I’ve never liked the argument that “Protestants can’t agree on the essentials” or “Protestants can’t agree on what the essentials are.” Who cares? Even if they did, the problem is Protestants don’t share the “one faith” commended by St. Paul in Eph. 4 and by the Fathers when describing the Church. While some articles are more essential than others insofar they are means to salvation, each and every article is just as essential for belief because the motive is not its dignity or connection and end but God revealing. I’d grant that Protestants agree on 95% of the Apostle’s Creed. Who cares? They don’t have unity of faith like the Fathers nor the Catholic Church, and, most importantly, as Christ wills it.
