@mattyglesias What in the world. Most people would prefer a city like SF that manages to make a lot of money while preserving enough natural beauty to make living (or visiting) worthwhile. No one wants to live in Chicago or Detroit circa 1950, much less a “mega city” if they don’t have to.

@mattyglesias Nah. With every new generation, urbanists suggest that this one wants to live on top of each other, and each time once they can afford it they go looking for space. Vacations, too, are largely seeking to avoid. We need to accept we are more tiger than wolf.

@mattyglesias We can argue whether there’s any non-corrupt path to making billions. The problem is the billionaires with dumb/selfish ideas have the power to impose them on the rest of us, esp. in a Trumpian/corrupt society.

We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues. We realize this made it less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems, but given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get this right. Now that we have been able to mitigate the serious mental health issues and have new tools, we are going to be able to safely relax the restrictions in most cases. In a few weeks, we plan to put out a new version of ChatGPT that allows people to have a personality that behaves more like what people liked about 4o (we hope it will be better!). If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, or use a ton of emoji, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it (but only if you want it, not because we are usage-maxxing). In December, as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our “treat adult users like adults” principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.

@lxeagle17 Go further: it’s too easy for anyone to get a gun. Normal people need to stop normalizing both the guns and the violence. No more well-meaning Dems saying “well of course I have my own cache of guns” like it’s the most normal thing in the world. Stigmatize them like cigarettes.

Relatedly: I continue to think we make it too easy for mentally-ill people in this country to get and wield a gun, and when you pair that with horrible mental health care and a rise in political violence, you're going to get some really, really bad stuff. We need to fix it.
