I recently came across a case in which a Ragdoll cat, abused after being handed over to an adopter, spent more than 16 hours in intensive care. The original rescuer who entrusted the cat to the adopter said they had reached their emotional and financial limits. Japan also has cases of adoption scams carried out for the purpose of animal abuse. However, many rescue groups require adopters to provide identification, and often require a guarantor as well, who must also present identification. As a result, even animal abusers themselves sometimes avoid adoption events, saying things like, “They require ID, so that won’t work.” Of course, some offenders still manage to deceive rescuers despite these safeguards.
