Independent reading of self-selected books is essential for ELA classes & should occur for 15-20 min. when class meets. Ss read about diverse cultures & lifestyles & develop the empathy, compassion, & understanding to be global citizens solving world problems. @ERobbPrincipal

BTW, overloading teachers w/ PD can have an adverse effect in that teachers will feel inundated with too many new strategies/ideas to try & feel overwhelmed or discouraged. They're professionals, trust them to do whats best for their kids or engage in PD they feel benefits them.

Today's the day! 🦍📽️ The @IvanMovie is now streaming on @disneyplus. To celebrate, I'm giving away a classroom set of 24 IVAN paperbacks (w/ signed bookplates!) to a US educator who RTs this. I'll notify a random winner on 8/24 at 2 PM PT. Good luck, and enjoy the film! ❤️

Unpopular opinion of the day: Requiring reading logs documenting how many minutes or pages young people read is more about compliance and exerting control than "motivating" readers or "proving" any reading occurred.

Unpopular opinion of the day: "Create an online reading community" is not code for "add even more control over young people's reading lives at home." Children & adolescents need (and want) to read self-selected texts and engage in family literacy activities w/out school mandates.
