As we wrap up Women’s History Month, we’re shining a spotlight on a "Webbie" who is redefining what’s possible in engineering and leadership. Meet Simmy Willemann ’10. From her days at Webb to her current role at Apple decarbonizing consumer electronics, Simmy’s journey is a masterclass in versatility. She recently joined our "Women of Webb" (WoW) at the Society of Women Engineers conference to share how the grit, humor, and problem-solving she learned here prepared her for life as a global tech leader and a mom. "It’s life-affirming to meet younger Webbies and see their drive and spirit," Simmy says. We couldn't agree more. Read Simmy’s full story and her three key pieces of advice for engineering students on our blog: webb.edu/blog/2026/03/0… #WebbInstitute #WomenInEngineering #WomensHistoryMonth #WomenOfWebb #AppleEngineering #STEM #WebbAlumni

We are very proud to share that Richard Harris, our John J. McMullen Professor of Humanities, was recently featured for his pivotal role in honoring the Harlem Hellfighters (369th Infantry Regiment). At a special homecoming event at the North Shore Historical Museum, Professor Harris- co-chair of the Harlem Hellfighters Recognition Project - discussed the journey of securing a Congressional Gold Medal for these WWI heroes, more than a century after their service. Did you know? Professor Harris didn’t just research their history; he helped design the medal itself. "What makes history fascinating is not just those facts," says Professor Harris, "but to me, the lives of the people we can find out about." Professor Harris brings this same passion for storytelling and cross-cultural perspective to Webb, where he challenges our engineering students to think "outside the hull" through his humanities classes and public speaking workshops. Join us in celebrating Professor Harris’s dedication to bringing these overlooked stories to light and ensuring these soldiers receive the national recognition they earned. At Webb Institute, we believe the best engineers are the ones who know how to find balance - both in the classroom and on the slopes. Our students took a well-deserved break from the drafting tables for our annual ski trip. This long-standing tradition is a vital part of the Webb experience, fostering the camaraderie and leadership that our graduates carry into the maritime industry. It’s not just about the skiing; it’s about the community that makes Webb one of the most unique engineering colleges in the world. #HigherEd #EngineeringEducation #WebbInstitute #StudentLife #FutureEngineers #NavalArchitecture #MarineEngineering #WebbInstitute #Maritime

Webb Institute recently joined leadership at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division, to reinforce a strategic partnership that literally predates the command itself! This visit was more than just a meeting; it was a deep dive into the NEXUS initiative, a collaborative effort designed to fortify the nation’s naval engineering pipeline. By aligning Webb’s 130-year legacy with Carderock’s world-class ship and submarine design expertise, we are ensuring our students are uniquely prepared for the complex maritime challenges of tomorrow. Key Highlights: Strategic Leadership: President Mark Martecchini and Dean Matthew Werner engaged with senior technical experts on everything from hull form design to propulsors. A New Milestone: We are proud to celebrate Dean Werner’s appointment as the NAVSEA Professor, a cornerstone role in the NEXUS mission. Real-World Impact: Through our Education Partnership Agreement (EPA), Webb students and faculty continue to gain access to premier facilities like the David Taylor Model Basin to solve real-world Navy challenges. Webb Alumni Connections: The visit concluded with a lunch connecting Webb leadership with our talented alumni currently serving across the NAVSEA Enterprise. As Rear Adm. Pete Small stated, "There has never been a more critical time for our naval engineering community." Webb is honored to stand at the forefront of that mission. While not an official stop on the President’s Tour, the Webb spirit knows no borders! Last weekend, several of our European-based alumni and their families gathered in #Oslo for a fantastic regional meetup. It was a weekend dedicated to maritime heritage and camaraderie: ⚓ Exploring History: The group dove into Norway’s legendary legacy of navigation with visits to the Fram, Kon-Tiki, and Maritime Museums. ⚓ On the Water: Taking a page from their own expertise, they enjoyed a scenic sightseeing cruise through the stunning Oslo fjord. ⚓ Good Food & Great Company: The reunion wrapped up with plenty of shared stories over hearty, traditional Norwegian cuisine. We love seeing our global community stay connected and continue the Webb tradition of exploration, even thousands of miles from New York! #WebbInstitute #WebbAlumni #Norway #Oslo #MaritimeHistory #GlobalWebbies #NavalArchitecture

From the lab to the sea, Webb is harnessing "fluttering" energy by making waves in renewable energy! Professors Spenser Boyd and Rick Royce are leading a project to harvest power from ocean currents using Vortex-Induced Vibration (VIV). Unlike traditional turbines, these submerged "fluttering foils" can generate electricity in low-flow currents, making them a game-changer for sustainable marine tech. With the recent deployment of a high-tech NexSens buoy in the Long Island Sound, the team is now gathering the granular data needed to move this prototype from the lab to the open ocean. Click the link below to read the full story of how Webb is engineering the future of marine energy. 🔗 fondriest.com/news/harnessin… #WebbInstitute #MarineEngineering #CleanEnergy #Innovation #STEM #NavalArchitecture #Maritime

"Woodshop open!" For Dr. Matthew McMahon and his family, Webb isn’t just where he teaches #Engineering #Sciences, it’s home. From cheering on the basketball team to watching freshman boat races, the sense of community on campus is what makes the "Webbie" experience so special. But that community doesn't stop at the mansion gates. Dr. McMahon is leveraging his role as a Materials Engineer with the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWCCD) to create incredible new opportunities for our students through a newly signed Educational Partnership Agreement. Discover how this "private-public" collaboration is enhancing experiential learning and mentorship at Webb.
