@CarsleyGolf True. Like the time a co-worker three beers in dribbled one off the tee, started running after the slow rolling ball, got the club sideways between his legs, did a header off the teebox and hurt his knee.

When you play golf with the right people, all you do is laugh. Score becomes irrelevant. It’s the most social sport in the world.

@Empty_America I've been told when you smell rain in the dry regions it's because sage (tumbleweeds) releases pollen when smashed by big desert raindrops. The pollen get picked up and carried ahead of where the rain is headed.

The Arcane Texas Fact of the Day: For thousands of years, Hueco Tanks served as a vital gathering place for Native peoples in the arid expanses of El Paso County, Texas. Often described as an American Indian ghost town, the site owes its long human history to natural cistern-like depressions in the rocks of three prominent hills. These “huecos”— a Spanish word for “hollows”—trapped rainwater and held it for months, providing a rare reliable water source in the desert. The site lies on the western flank of the Hueco Mountains in far West Texas. These low, rugged peaks formed roughly 30 million years ago when molten rock from deep within the earth intruded into overlying sedimentary layers. Over eons, the softer surrounding material eroded away, exposing low-grade granite that rises about 400 feet above the surrounding desert flats. Thunderstorm runoff collected in natural depressions within the igneous rock, creating the life-sustaining tanks that drew both prehistoric and historic inhabitants. The earliest documented visitors were Folsom-era hunters and gatherers who came around 10,000 years ago. Subsequent transient Native groups periodically returned to hunt game and harvest edible plants. A more permanent chapter began when sedentary farmers of the Jornada branch of the Mogollon culture established a thriving community at Hueco Tanks from roughly AD 1150 to 1350. They constructed a village of rectangular, one-room pit houses near the north end of the easternmost hill. The walls rose above ground level, and roofs—supported by pairs of wooden posts—sheltered the living spaces. The villagers cultivated crops in the fertile alluvial wash that flowed eastward from the hills; even today, vegetation in this wash remains noticeably lusher than in the surrounding soil. These inhabitants were resourceful engineers as well as farmers. They dammed narrow crevices in the granite and constructed stone diversion dams to channel more runoff into the natural tanks, expanding their water supply. They also left behind a rich legacy of rock art, painting hundreds of figures on the stone surfaces. By about AD 1400, the village had been abandoned—part of a broader pattern of departure by sedentary peoples across the Southwest. Afterward, nomadic hunters and gatherers once again frequented the oasis-like site, leaving their own artifacts and additional paintings. Following the arrival of Spaniards and their Pueblo Indian allies in the El Paso area in 1680, both groups began making occasional visits. The tanks gradually became known to travelers, and their use surged after the 1849 California Gold Rush as hundreds of westward-bound gold seekers passed through. In 1858, Hueco Tanks briefly served as a stagecoach station on the famed Butterfield Overland Mail route. The arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad in El Paso in 1881 diminished the site’s importance as a desert watering place. Faster rail travel made isolated stops like Hueco Tanks obsolete. Local ranchers took over the surrounding lands, and the historic site faded from public memory. In the mid-20th century, as private developers began subdividing nearby property for rural home sites, historic preservationists and archaeologists urged protection. In 1960, the City of El Paso purchased Hueco Tanks. Nine years later, in 1969, the county transferred the property to the State of Texas. After acquiring additional acreage, the state opened Hueco Tanks State Historical Park in 1970, preserving this remarkable cultural and natural landmark for future generations. Shown here: One of my own photos of the Hueco mountains. The actual cisterns that hold the water are among the rocks. I took this in 2009. The rocks haven't changed much since then. 😉

@NBACobwebs Rockets won an ethical coin flip 2 years in a row with 2 generational big men, Jordan and Drexler on the draft board. June 27, 1984, barely a month later, the NBA ended the tie breaker coin flip and announced a lottery system. Rockets Thomas and Fitch Irish luck broke the system.

@LucasNavarreteM Watch the old games. Guys respected the landing spot for jump shooters. Jordan didn't collapse landing because the defender would turn sideways on closeouts. Make the penalty worse for landing space fouls. Suspensions. Then hammer guys who still flop after the rule change.

@FrankBr05713205 Golf courses can use them. You need a strong base to operate those standing on hills and in pot bunkers, areas too uneven for a riding or push mower to get to. They definitely do a nice job but it take strength and balance to operate one.

How many of you have seen or perhaps used one of these hover lawnmowers by Flymo? This is a 1980s model and was very popular for a while until they were banned for use in the United States due to safety reasons from what I understand. They had no wheels and rode on a cushion of air so they’re very easy to push. They’re still available in other countries and even in electric models.

"Weird Al" credits Van Halen for helping him start his Hawaiian shirt collection. "Van Halen had the thing where they had no brown M&M's in their rider, which they say they did for safety concerns, sort of like the canary in the coal mine thing. 'Well if you don't get that right how are you going to get everything else right…' But I was just thinking, 'Oh, you can ask for free stuff, great: give me a free tacky Hawaiian shirt for every show that I do.' That year I did 200 shows, so I got 200 shirts. That was a jump start for my collection." (via @rockschoolpod) 📸: Ron Adar / Shutterstock
