Spongebob memes and weak analogies are not changing the fact that you can barely call LLMs intelligent. We just make the error that we think that semantic processing is the same as intelligence. It isn't, we humans use intelligence to make semantic analysis. A -> B ≠ B -> A. Give an LLM knowledge up until 1905 and then try getting out the theory of relativity, you won't. I use LLMs for 100% of what I do and AI is my favorite topic for 18 years at this point. While I think they can take over human tasks in a broad range of fields, they cannot replace even the simplest human mind, especially reliably. They lack any true understanding of the domain they work in, that is why you don't get proper long-running agents even with models like Fable, as impressive as they are. I talked to someone at one of the labs and their theory is that Dario’s messaging is exclusively for the AI researchers “He doesn’t care about public sentiment because it doesn’t matter His only goal is to say things the best ML researchers in the world find appealing, because if enough of those work for him he just wins by default. Claude will figure out how to train him in politics afterward”

いやあ、もう嫌なになるね。Opus 4.8で作業するとポンコツ感がひどい。いや、Fable 5だと気を利かせて、そこに切れ味ある解決案出してきたじゃん、みたいなのが、ない。本当に格下感。Codexでも全然足りない。一度上位のLLMに触れると、下位に降りれなくなる。体験が違いすぎる。

Tyler Cowen on the Fable/Mythos event. The issue with point 5 is that we are probably less than a year away from powerful RSI. Once automated researchers reach parity, the USG 𝘤𝘢𝘯 nationalize the labs and run them effectively, without any of the people currently working there.

If this is true, it is just baffling. An administration whose posture is that we *should* export advanced AI chips to China, which also wants to ban… Britain (and every other non-American on Earth)… from using our best models? I have no words.
