Abaarso Schools are carrying forward a proud legacy. Decades ago, Sheikh and Amoud Secondary Schools shaped the leaders who built the Republic of #Somaliland. Today, Abaarso is shaping the leaders who will define its future. Institutions change, but the mission remains - educate, inspire, and lead.

New case study from @DardenMBA highlights a powerful Somaliland success story. Founded in 2009, @abaarsonetwork Abaarso School of Science & Technology is a nonprofit boarding school that identifies high-potential students regardless of background and prepares them for global leadership. The school has become one of Somaliland’s most impactful education institutions. To date, Abaarso graduates have earned nearly $50 million in scholarships, securing admission to top universities including Harvard, Yale, Oxford and many others. The Darden case—co-written by Prof. Rupert Freeman and alumnus James Linville—explores how student success is best predicted not just by raw talent, but by effort, persistence and sustained hard work, using real data from Abaarso’s admissions process. #BarwaaqoUniversity hosted an inspiring Career Day, bringing together leaders from government, private sector, NGOs, & higher education. Students engaged in panels, workshops, and Q&As, exploring career paths, gaining insights, & connecting with professionals shaping the future.

The #BarwaaqoUniversity Cultural Center is a student-led initiative founded by BU student Hannah, creating a shared space for cultural learning and connection. By showcasing community-contributed cultural items, it brings students & faculty together.

#AbaarsoNetwork staff gatherings bring teams from across our schools together to reflect on progress, tackle challenges, set goals for the next academic period, and celebrate achievements—keeping collaboration and student-centered learning at the heart of all we do.

2/2 Now pursuing her Master’s in Business Analytics at TCU, Hamda is building data skills to drive business & social impact. Passionate about finance, healthcare, and development, she hopes to return to Somaliland to lead data-driven innovation.

1/2 Meet Hamda! An Abaarso alumna who joined #AbaarsoSchool in 2014 and went on a global academic journey—from Somaliland to Berkshire School (MA), then Bowdoin College, where she studied Economics & Sociology with a minor in Digital & Computational Science.

#BarwaaqoUniversity students spend their afternoons teaching children from Balliga-Cas through our community school—mentoring young learners and building a community rooted in education, curiosity, and shared responsibility.

2/2 From guiding peers to organizing activities and building connection, Barwaaqo highlights how young women lead with purpose and care—creating a campus where everyone can grow, belong, and thrive together.

1/2 At #BarwaaqoUniversity, students help shape their own campus experience through a unique leadership system. Barwaaqo has four House Presidents—Culture, Wellness, Academics, and Social—each playing a key role in supporting their house and the wider campus community.

Our students are back on campus after a well-deserved 3 week break. Refreshed, recharged, and ready to take on new challenges and learning adventures!

Calling students aged 12–14! The Abaarso School entrance exam is coming to Hargeisa. Additional exam dates and cities across Somaliland will be shared soon.

#AbaarsoSchool celebrated Somali Cultural Day with traditional dress, poetry, theatre, and student-led performances. Through drama and original poems, students expressed Somali values, identity, and pride, showing that our culture is not only remembered, but lived.
