Following my trip to schools in India earlier this year, it was the people we met that left the most lasting impression. Their blend of determination, humour & optimism was infectious. It reminded me that it’s the mindset of staff & communities that carried schools forward.

At Masefield we believe that playtimes/lunchtimes aren’t just a break from learning, they’re an extension of the classroom. These moments aren’t “extras’ – they’re vital parts of a child’s social & emotional development, and shape the culture of the school as much as any lesson.

SATs – it’s easier to keep up than catch up. That’s the view I shared with @TeachPrimary recently (p47)👉 theteachco.com/uploads/specia… With shared ownership, clear expectations & regular analysis of assessment data, SATs can be a steady marathon rather than an intense sprint.

How can we pinpoint what children know in foundation subjects without increasing teacher workload? The solution is @LbQorg. It enabled us to write our own question sets, for our curriculum. Our children now know more, remember more, and do more. And staff workload is lighter!

The power of doing less, better. A challenge we used to face at Masefield was lack of focus. So, we removed the clutter — physical and cognitive — so that teaching & learning can take centre stage. Workload has improved, quality has risen, and teachers are flourishing.

Great teaching isn’t about a one-off performance — it’s built through daily routines, consistent expectations and shared practice. When something works, we make it part of our culture. And, when implementing change, platforms like @LbQorg help make new, improved habits stick.

We built The BASE tuck shop to help children at Masefield develop their oracy skills. It’s open every day, with different children from throughout the school running it. We want school to be a place where talk happens, in every lesson, every day, through every part of the day.
