Congratulations to Angela, and thank you @AmCollegeGastro for funding her to continue her important research on anti-inflammatory diets for #IBD @UCLAGIHep @dgsomucla ! ❓Is just increasing fiber in diet enough?

Our study — in @IBDJournals— found that 13.48% of adults w/#IBD in the USA have food insecurity, compared w/8.96% of adults w/o IBD. Screening for food insecurity must take place before making diet recommendations, so interventions are accessible. doi.org/10.1093/ibd/iz…

Could #prebiotics aid in the management of #IBD❓ Some clues from the first summary of available evidence of prebiotics in IBD from @berkeleydoc, @DrMullin & colleagues: ✅ No strong evidence to use prebiotics for induction or maintenance of remission in IBD ✅ Some fructooligosaccharides (1-kestose) at 10 g/d or oligofructose-enriched inulin at 12-15 g/d might have a benefit for the induction of clinical remission in UC ✅ Germinated barley foodstuff at 20 g/d or Plantago ovata seeds (psyllium/ispaghula) at 20 g/d might be helpful for maintenance of remission in UC ❌ No difference between prebiotics and controls for the induction and maintenance of CD 💡Although prebiotics cannot be formally recommended for treatment of IBD yet, their potential health benefits and low risk of adverse effects (other than flatulence and bloating) would favor their use for patients with IBD @IBDJournals @CrohnsColitisFn

@C_ompounding @DrZhaopingLi @UCLAGIHep The absence of a specific diet was intentional, as it allowed for testing of the hypothesis that diet quality was an important factor. The hope was to provide people with greater flexibility in anti-inflammatory cuisine choices.

@C_ompounding @DrZhaopingLi @UCLAGIHep There was no specific "diet", but recommendations on principles of a "healthy diet". In general, those on whole food diet vs. control had ↑ fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, seafood, yogurt ↓ sodium, refined grains, saturated fats, solid fats, meat, cured meat, milk, cheese
