“Sometimes, the biggest mistake parents make is believing everything their child says before verifying the facts. One phone call from a parent reminded me why this matters.” Back when I worked as an admin in a primary school in Nigeria, one Friday after closing hours, my phone rang. Parent: “ Ms Pamela, I’m not going to take this! My son came back home upset. The teacher refused to give him a book. Is that how they treat children in your school?” Me: “Ma’am, please calm down and explain what happened.” Parent: “What do you mean calm down? My child said the teacher embarrassed him! They know what they’re doing. This is unacceptable!” Me: “Is your son there with you?” Parent: “Of course, he’s here listening. Let it not be like I’m saying what he didn’t say.” Me: “Okay. Please calm down. I’ll ask questions, find out what happened, and get back to you.” Parent: “Please do because right now, it’s only because you asked me not to call the teacher. I would have called her myself and given her my own piece of mind!” After the call ended, I sat there thinking. Does she realize what she’s teaching her child? First, when parents attack before verifying, children start believing teachers deserve little or no respect. Second, if I had allowed that confrontation immediately, how do you think that teacher would feel seeing that child afterward? Parents, protecting your child is important. But verifying first is equally important. Sometimes children tell stories from emotions, not full facts.
