She was inspired by the International Red Cross, which was started in 1863 in Geneva, Switzerland, by Henry Dunant after witnessing the Battle of Solferino. Barton did heroic nursing work during the U.S. Civil War (1861–1865), but the organization came later. The Rothschild ownership claim is a longstanding conspiracy theory without credible evidence.
