But his mother could not get a visa or afford to travel to the US to see him play. Word spread, and Americans being Americans, the US stepped in — got her visa sorted and covered the cost to bring her over so she can watch her son play in person. The first sip did not taste like beer. It hit me like a surprise attack from a direction I did not know a flavor could come from. I did not flinch. I calmly scanned the room for the man who had poisoned me. There was no man. The drink had done this to me by itself. I respected it immediately. I drank it all, waiting for the warmth. The loosening. The famous moment a serious man becomes a dancing man. Nothing came. I was as sober as a monk. So the bartender refilled it. Free. I drank that one too. Nothing. Another. Nothing. A fourth. And I felt it, rising in me. Not drunkenness. A legend. This American beer, the strongest in the world, the one they all bragged about, could not move me. Not one inch. I, alone among men, was immune. A small child at the end of the bar was drinking the very same beer. I gave her a slow nod of deep respect. A fellow warrior of unbreakable tolerance. She was perhaps six. They begin training early in this country. By the sixth glass I stood to leave. I rose perfectly straight. Not one stumble. I walked to the door like a man who had faced a nation's strongest drink and defeated it with his face. I have never been prouder of anything. I am a samurai, and I do not get drunk.
