The combination of a tram on beautiful historical streets when I visited Strasbourg 16-17 years ago was transformational for me and my advocacy for trams. I was back there a couple of weekends ago and the trams were as popular as ever. Build more trams.

📷 Do you live, work or spend time in Blackpool? What would make Blackpool’s streets and public transport work better for everyday life? We are currently working on a report exploring what practical improvements to streets and public transport matter most to people, and how these can strengthen towns across the UK. As part of this, we’ve launched our ‘Creating a Better Blackpool’ survey and are inviting people who live, work or spend time here to share their views. If you have a minute to spare, please respond to our quick and fun survey communities.createstreets.com/BetterBlackpool #blackpool #engagement #takepart

Fingers crossed that this becomes a trend & we start removing hideous single use ugly shopping centres & replacing them with real middles, mingling uses & attractive as the public, not the advisors, understand it. Something very similar, on which we advised, has also recently won permission in Newbury . The moral is … createstreets.com/projects/resti…

In very exciting news, and we must hope it becomes reality, Quinlan Terry is working on a project in Oxford to replace the Clarendon Centre with multiple new buildings and a pedestrian-only square. More info here: oxfordclarion.uk/the-clarion-10…

Was great to hear from @RobertKwolek last night from @createstreets on the need for housebuilders to value design and aesthetics, not just efficiency. Restoring public trust into development is no easy task, but these guys are leading the way on making it happen.

There's a big difference between progress that feels/looks like a continuation, & when it feels like a wilful violation of a beloved cityscape. The 1970s Central Library in Brum was a brutalist masterpiece but people hated - really, viscerally hated - the destruction it embodied.

London is always being lost and re-found. Every generation harms the city that came before. The Edwardians replaced much of central London with cliffs of classically ornate Portland stone. Few complained. Shock, for example, was muted when this turned into...

Before the Second World War, people around the world trusted that development would make places better, by and large. That trust was lost by the 1970s, and since then housing shortages have emerged in most Western countries.

Pride in Place is bringing £20 million to transform Willenhall. The best part? The people there get to decide how it's spent! I sat down with Chair Matthew Bull, Vicar of St John the Divine, and a group of residents to discuss their ideas for where the money should go.

Most council’s housing targets have doubled. NPPF updates have introduced new transport rules: vision-led planning, changing parking standards, continuous pavement references, placemaking guidance and pavement parking bans. The pressure on local authorities to deliver more and better housing schemes has never been higher. Yet, housing and transport remain trapped in separate silos, despite being two sides of the same coin. This fragmentation creates conflict at the finish line, where planning visions clash with technical adoption standards, leading to delays, cost increases and compromised street quality. This webinar seeks to bridge that gap, offering voices who are delivering streets from vision to adoption. Streets that are functional and emotional. We will provide examples of how to lock in quality at scale be it, navigating the technicalities of continuous footways, the "Asphalt vs. Block Paving" maintenance debate, or the pathway from planning consent to highway adoption. 🎟️ Sign up to join for free here tickettailor.com/events/creates…
