My good friend, Steve Moore, died 12 years ago. Back then, I made this in his memory. Our friendship started as two Yijing geeks meeting in cyberspace, not because of his comics or Fortean Times career. Through him I got to befriend Alan Moore. We both got to write his obituary in Fortean Times, Alan talking about his life long friendship with Steve and me talking about Steve's contributions to the field of Yixue. He's still dearly missed. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Moo…

Technically this makes Sailor Moon an immortal "transcendent 仙." 夜光所德, 死則又育? 厥利維何, 而顧菟在腹? What does night's brightest light beget that after death it is reborn again? And what does it benefit from rearing a rabbit in its abdomen?

Always knew Sailor Moon was called Usagi ("Rabbit") but only just realized her full name is a pun for "the Rabbit in the Moon"

Here are 10 ways that Trump’s Big Ugly Bill will make your life more expensive: 1. Your utility bills go up as we lose clean energy investments and electricity costs more; 2. Your rent goes up as predatory housing companies artificially jack up prices;

Heard the sad news about Brian today and thought about all the years I’ve been listening to him and admiring his genius. Rest in peace dear Brian.

@RnaudBertrand I visited both the Jinsha and Sanxingdui museums this summer and also was blown away! Here is a commemorative coin I purchased at Jinsha—I award these to my students for good work in my Chinese Civilization class!

Today we visited the extraordinary Jinsha archeological site and its museum in Chengdu in China's Sichuan province. Jinsha was the former capital of the mysterious Shu kingdom that ruled Sichuan's Chengdu plain between the 16th century BC (3,600 years ago) and the 6th century BC. Its existence overlaps with China's Shang dynasty of which it may have been a tributary state. For those who've heard of SanXinDui (and immense shame on you if you haven't!), it is the same culture: Jinsha was the capital of the Shu kingdom after SanXinDui. The Shu kingdom is particularly famous for its otherworldly artifacts that look almost like aliens' work, and are incredibly advanced for something made close to 4,000 years ago, as if they were made with modern technology. They're also famous for their use of gold in their artefacts which is surprisingly rare in China's history (China has normally always preferred jade to gold), as a matter of fact "Jinsha" means "gold sand". Look for instance at this mask made of extremely pure gold 👇 that was found at the site and that I photographed in the museum today: this face shape is characteristic of Shu kingdom artefacts, and so is the amazing craftsmanship. Let me share as a 🧵 a few of the other treasures that blew my mind at the museum today.

In 2009 when I started studying Chinese, a big thing at the time that helped me stick to it was: Any time I mentioned to someone I wanted to learn Chinese, I'd get intense positive feedback: "man that's so smart" "oh you're gonna find a great job" "that's the future, right?"

Difficult to summarise my first 3 weeks in China (after five years!) but the amount of generosity, hospitality & kindness I've been met with is genuinely mind-blowing! So good to be here, talking to colleagues & friends about all things palaces for the living & the dead 🤓
