@CleansedTweets You in the UK are ripe for this type of surveillance. I saw mission creep every time I visited over the last 3O years. Japan's NEC supplies your police facial recognition system. How long before that is required everywhere. Tread carefully, please.

Miss Money Penny (AKA British Miss)
I recorded this while flying over Beijing. Notice the flashes? These are everywhere in China. They photograph every passing car, capturing the license plate, front of the vehicle, and the driver's face through the windshield. The bright white flash lights up the car's interior so the driver is clearly visible, even at night. They're used for security, catching wanted people or stolen vehicles, verifying the licensed driver, automatically detecting violations (no seatbelt, phone use, unlicensed driving), and matching faces against the national database for warrants. Results are instant.

@MerrynSW Estimated £24.1 billion in income-related benefits & social tariffs goes unclaimed in the UK each year. Includes around £8 billion in Universal Credit + over £3 billion in council tax support, millions of households. Many benefits are missed owing to complex application processes

For those who can't quite believe the income numbers for those on benefits you see on social media (and I can see why...) play about with this website a bit and you will get the idea. Note even the name suggests maybe the wrong thing... ("entitled to"). entitledto.co.uk

@rieglobe Bit of free advice after visiting your website. Japanese journos may be OK with form-filing, but what us Anglo hacks respond to is a webpage link to a real person via email.

So contrarian of us to be Englishmaxxing when everyone else is Japanmaxxing. Reach out if this is you, Coral is hiring👇🏼
James Riney🐠Coral Capital@james_riney

We're hiring our first dedicated English content lead at Coral Capital. The role: build our international media presence from the ground up. YouTube, podcast, events, editorial. Full ownership. Japan is rearming, reindustrializing, and becoming the West's most important industrial partner in Asia. Trillions in capital, world-class manufacturing in robotics and semiconductors, deep alignment with the US. It's arguably the most under-told story in global tech right now. We've spent a decade building the network and thesis to tell this story with authority. We have 100,000+ subscribers on YouTube (the largest tech-focused channel in Japan), a portfolio that includes companies like SmartHR, Kyoto Fusioneering, and GITAI, and direct relationships across Japan's startup ecosystem, LP community, and industrial base. What we don't have yet is someone dedicated to making the English-language version of this story as strong as the Japanese one. The right person is a strong English speaker with real Japanese ability, has editorial instinct and ideally production experience (writing, video, podcasts), is comfortable in rooms with founders and LPs, and finds the Japan story genuinely compelling. Not a marketing hire. A content leader. Based in Tokyo 🗼 Details in the replies 👇

@wonderparlour And maybe with that added strengh, help us wrentch the Wirral and Liverpool back from the perfidious Welsh (according to your map). Perhaps we could also get The Isle of Man back from the marauding Scots? Hope you make scones better than your maps.

ワンダーパーラー クラシカルメイド®
At this time of year, a round trip to London costs around £1,400–£1,500 (¥300,000), and the thought of hotel prices there is enough to make one look away. So when British guests come to my café, it fills me with a particular kind of happiness. For a small independent café owner like myself, their visit keeps the feeling of Britain gently alive in my heart, and with it, the will to carry on.

@lcmporter Compounded by working with the flaky younger generation of editors. It is now a game absolutely unworthy of the meagre candle.

I was freelance for four years and i think things have only deteriorated since. People who don't work in this field are often shocked when you tell them how low the wages are. How long you wait to get paid and how much you have to beat down accounting departments' doors to get money you are owed for work you did months ago. How little support there is from media outlets who themselves are all stretched. How some editors (not all) can just change their minds half way through an assignment and decide that they don't want your work anymore (ie, you don't get paid, or get paid a fraction of the original agreed sum), or decide that they are going to get a staffer to do the job instead.

The grim reality summed up by @liz_cookman : “For freelance foreign correspondents, essentially if you haven’t got the ability to just send yourself somewhere and take the hit of being extremely miserable and uncomfortable, staying in the worst conditions, having no money and basically not getting paid for your work, you’re not going to work.” pressgazette.co.uk/press-gazette-…

Japan recently introduced a “digital nomad” visa under which foreign nationals from specific countries (because it involves tax treaties) can work remotely for a foreign country for up to a six months of the year. Must have an income of JPY 20,000,000 or above and have health insurance for the whole period.

moj.go.jp/isa/applicatio…

One of the most extraordinary things about Japan is how it likes to dwell on recycling. When, in fact, it is no better than its less exacting peers. Thankfully, local startups like @esa_inc_2022 can change all that. (image credit). "Thermal recycling" means burning its rubbish.

@rieglobe Nice, but Japan's global impact is zilch without understanding Anglo comms and an adequate budget for it.

@WR4NYGov "Rice polishing removes most impurities linked to hangovers & inflammation" only for the most expensive sake. The rest are polished a little as is expensive to do so. So unless you are rich you will suffer.

Japanese sake is the least bad alcohol. • Ultra-clean: Rice polishing removes most impurities linked to hangovers & inflammation. • Rich in amino acids supporting muscle repair & blood pressure benefits. • Antioxidants like ferulic acid + peptides for oxidative stress & skin hydration. • Less acidic than wine. Low calorie. • Moderate intake has lower heart risks than abstaining. Kanpai!
