The Standard reports that a big ship called MT Paloma arrived in Mombasa on March 27 carrying about 60,200 metric tonnes of petrol. A company called One Petroleum brought in the fuel and quickly sent out many bills to oil companies. In just one day’s supply, they asked for more than Sh8 billion. In total, they sent at least 57 bills on March 28, even before the government had agreed the fuel could be used. Some companies were asked to pay a lot of money. Vivo Energy was asked for over Sh2.24 billion. TotalEnergies was billed more than Sh1.85 billion. All this was happening while the govt through CS OPiyo Wandayi, was still telling Kenyans that the fuel would not enter the market. Tests later showed the fuel did not meet quality standards because it had too much sulphur. Fuel with high sulphur can damage car engines, clog parts, increase fuel use, and produce more harmful smoke. But the fuel was still allowed in and mixed with other fuel. Later, Wandayi stood up and said the fuel must be removed from Kenya and no one should pay for it. But by that time, it was already too late because the fuel was already in the system and possibly in the market. There was also a big issue with the price. The fuel was being sold at about Sh198,000 per metric tonne, yet under the normal government deal it should be around Sh140,000. Energy CS Opiyo Wandayi lied to Kenyans, and he should resign.
