This reminds me of the guys in work or social spaces who watch sexual harassment or sexism & say nothing or laugh then spinelessly slither up to the woman after saying they didn't agree with that or they're here to be a friend. The character test isn't when it's safe.

Nobody cares that the USA men's team now says that they're "friends" and supporters of the women's team in the village and elsewhere. In the moment, when the women were demeaned, they laughed. No one stood up, no one has said it was wrong since. That's not how friendship works.
