Clarence Mitchell Jr. was the chief lobbyist for the NAACP for almost 30 years. He played an important role in the passing of the Civil Rights Acts of 1957, 1960, and 1964. In his retirement, he wrote weekly column for the Baltimore Sun. #BlackHistoryMonth

Dr. Lillie Mae Carroll Jackson was the organizer of the Baltimore branch of the NAACP. She is known as the "mother of the civil rights movement" for her contributions to the early days of the movement including the "Buy where you can work campaign." #BlackHistoryMonth

Thurgood Marshall, born in Baltimore, was a lawyer and civil rights activist. As chief counsel for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, he argued for cases like Brown v. Board of Ed. In 1967, he became the first African American justice on the Supreme Court. #BlackHistoryMonth

Frederick Douglass (1818-1895), after escaping slavery, became a leader of the growing abolitionist movement. He became a famous author, public speaker, and activist. He was also an avid supporter of the women's rights movement. #BlackHistoryMonth

Kweisi Mfume has represented Maryland's 7th District from 1987-1996 and was re-elected in 2020. Representing West Baltimore and surrounding areas, Representative Mfume has fought to expand Obamacare, fund public schools, and increase aid to inner cities. #BlackHistoryMonth
