@MathyMcMatherso This is so cool, yeah. At this point I'm not surprised at what you were able to do, but it's cool to think about ChatGPT as the tool that lets you quickly code-switch (literally) when the barrier is language, not knowledge.

Hi everybody <3 My work has had me thinking nonstop about LLMs, OpenAI, ChatGPT, and what this new era of generative AI means for teachers. I might unravel this into a thread later, but for now, here's a link to my first draft ideas: @jolson_codes/5-lesson-plan-ideas-that-use-chatgpt-76d2fb18200e" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">medium.com/@jolson_codes/…

Today I learned this nuance of JavaScript and why it happens. My brain is on FIRE right now.

@jolson_codes @pckeller @CmonMattTHINK Taylor Polynomials: Each of the Power Series terms has a constant that comes out to: nth derivative of f(x) at some ‘a’ value, divided by n! The first term is the constant term: f(a)/0!

@pckeller @CmonMattTHINK Okay rad, thanks! Any other examples come to mind? Curious to know how far the utility of this goes.

@jolson_codes @CmonMattTHINK It is necessary if you want other formulas to behave nicely, like: n C r = n!/((n-r)!(r!)) If you apply this to find the # of ways to choose n items from n items, you really hope the answer comes out to 1. It does, but only if 0!=1.

@CmonMattTHINK What about being transparent about this rationale? E.g. Admitting that 0! is unknown, but that nCr when n=r has to be 1. Sub in x for 0! and solve and then we have an identity? Idk if this idea has legs, but if we're treating this like an identity, why not just embrace that?

@jolson_codes There are formulas, such as counting ways to select r objects from n available objects: n!/((n-r)!r!) When r=n, we’d like this formula to yield 1, so… 🤷🏼‍♂️😁

@CmonMattTHINK My gut reaction was actually to say that this use case doesn't feel real, and if you never see it irl, then what "0!" equals is more a matter of agreed-upon convention than logic.

@CmonMattTHINK This might be a foolish question, but how often and in what context does "0!" come up? I can't recall using it! When would it come up?

This actually happened. It made me happy. Student 1: "Ms. Levy, she's pushing me." Student 2: "No, he's pushing ME!" Me: "Um, Newton's Third Law?" Student 1: "Oh yeah, good point, I guess we were pushing on each other. So we both have to stop."

Got a school in Brooklyn who wants to do a mini 1-day hackthon, most likely in p5.js, which is rad! If you're an engineer who wants to help out, hit me up, I'll put you in contact with the teacher :)

Fangirling here at #CSTASummit. I had a chance to network with @kickrg and it turns out he was the math teacher of the incredible data artist @sxywu !!! Please follow them both!

@CmonMattTHINK I think this only ends up being useful if you go from an equation to a table of values, then plot the values, and then connect the dots. The idea that the graph is a map of values rather than "a weird magic shape that you transform with coefficients" is powerful for my S's

Sketching trig graphs by hand. Why do we still do it, when Desmos exists? Genuine question. Not saying we shouldn’t.

A few people in ed leadership have told me recently that the way to turn around a school is by changing who enrolls. This makes me sad.

I was again explaining to students today why they should check answers with each other (not me), and it was great having a resource to cite. Thanks @jolson_codes! @jolson_codes/what-if-answer-keys-are-bad-116018da2993" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">medium.com/@jolson_codes/…
