Haworth. In a graveyard full of tragic stories, this headstone must surely be the most thought-provoking. It is the grave of Joseph and Mary Leeming's 17 children, who all lived and died between 1853 and 1869 and only 3 of whom survived long enough to be named.

Averil Burleigh was initially influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites and drawn to Mediaeval subjects; in the 1930s she became known for her pictures in tempera. This work (c1940) by her husband Charles shows her painting at their home 7, Wilbury Crescent in London.

'A Sunny Day.' (1900) Elin Danielson's favourite subjects tend to be portraits of women engaged in daily work. Given the date of this picture, it was most likely painted in Livorno in Italy shortly after her marriage to the painter Raffaello Gambogi.

Did you know that the oldest recorded poem in English is about Good Friday? This is The Dream of the Rood - a poem where the cross of Christ talks to the poet about the crucifixion - read in Old English by Dr Alexandra Zhirnova, at @StPaulsLondon.

A Maundy scene in an Anglo-Saxon manuscript: monks washing feet and a king giving to the poor. Maundy Thursday takes its medieval name from these acts of charity, following Christ's commandment at the Last Supper. His 'mandatum' became 'mandé' in French, 'maundy' in English.

Stanley Spencer recorded in his 1938 Desk Diary that he began 'Magnolias,' in March of that year. On 5th April 1938, he wrote to his dealer Dudley Tooth saying that the painting was 'as good as anything I have done.'
