We're not a democracy, we're a constitutional republic. Currently far more voting power lives with people both rich and poor who don't pay taxes. The promise to keep those loopholes and increase entitlements will both drive the country under as well as continue to put those in power uninterested in losing it and therefore continuing to allow so many to get screwed over.

There's no good civic argument for the electoral college. It was arguably necessary to ensure the ratification of the Constitution, but it's an anti-democratic device that gives some American citizens far more voting power than others, based purely on where they live.
